I've always been a terrible sucker for a decent burger, let alone a highly touted one and have been wanting to try LB for years. Recently my wife and her friend came back from lunch there with the surprisingly anomalous report that the burgers they had were average at best. How could this be I thought? I invited her to a 2nd LB try today, but she wouldn't join me. I went with as open a mind as possible, if anything expecting to argue with her to the effect that the huge majority of enthusiastic web & print reviewers were right and that she and her girlfriend were either just plain wrong, had gone senile, or something was just plain off at LB that day. But no. The grass fed beef hamburg was very ordinary:it was a big 7 oz, so probably it was worth the $6.99, with only ketchup on it so as to minimize extraneous tastes.
Would I go back? No reason to. Gourmet burgers are experiencing a Renaissance at chic eateries, even as far out as here into the wilds of Western Mass. And for about the same price as at LB (abt $15) one can get haute cuisine 8 oz burgers with homemade ketchup/ special tomato jam, custom made, toasted buns, and truffle fries, nicely served in a pretty setting in the best posh restaurant for 25 miles. At the time I was there, about 3PM on a Thursday, the place was loaded up with 20+ year olds, perhaps a function of lower price/a la carte options, their having grown up on McDonalds, lower disposable income, and perhap carrying a romanticized fantasy of what the hamburgs & shakes & fries must have been like for the Fonz..
As a child of the 50's growing up in NYC I was probably spoiled by many fresh burger bistros. Compared with those, the home cooked burgers my mother made were decent but never as good. A bit sadly I suspect the average age of the enthusiastic Yelp and other reviewers is about 25 years, putting them about even with the point at which McD's sold its 3rd billionth burger. Not so sadly, this would place LB's on about a par with my mom's "average" home cooked burgers -- definitely decent but not really worth a trip.
