“Yuck! Really Gross!”
Reviewed July 17, 2007

Yuck, Yuck, Yuck!

Our first impression of White Sands was to immediately fly back to Chicago. We booked an "enclave" room, paid for it, saw the room, and asked for our money back. We were refused. Our room was upgraded to a "nicer" room which was equally as repulsive as the first room appeared. We went out and spent $20 on cleaning supplies and lysol to rid of the nasty moldy odor. We took it upon ourselves to clean the pool (including the beer can that was floating in it) with a skimmer, and was yelled at by Jason (management) for doing so. The "spa" is the same temperature as the pool. We asked Jason's mother to turn it on and we had to wait about an hour for him to show up because she does not know how. He turned it on to a whopping 100 degrees which took about 5 hours to heat. The next morning it was off again, and he was nowhere to be found.

We found 3 bugs in our daughter's bed and dried blood stains on the conforter so we told Jason. 20 minutes later he came down and said "those are moths, and moths are not bugs." The bugs that we killed in the bed were not moths. He was very rude and seemed very bothered that we disturbed him.

Of course, Jason did not have the authority to give us our money back for the remaining 2 nights. We waited until the next morning for his mommy to show up and we were finally able to get 1/2 of our money back, so we could get the heck out of there. After one of the worst nights of our lives, and very little sleep due to the odor of overpowering mildew and lysol, it will be a cold day in hell before we visit White Sands again.

Pros: two pools; indoor and outdoor and the hot tub, comfy beds, refigerator and microwave, effective a/c unit, water pressure/temperature for shower and sink, pet friendly, TV with cable, private beach, deck view to beach.

Cons: Deceptive marketing tactics; poor room maintenance;
I could see the exterior of the motel was renovated, but there were not much changes to when we stayed in July 2003. They rebuilt their office but was not completed yet. We were not given the room that we reserved for $179 a night. I requested a room at the end of the unit with a deck facing the beach and was assured it was clean because it was a newly renovated room. It was not as advertised on their website. I was very disappointed and was shocked by the smell of the room. The room smelled musty and triggered my astma symtoms. I have to ask for a room deodorizer and desinfectant to kill the unbearable smell. The room was prep for only two and I have to ask for more soap and towels. The maids dressed the beds but did not change the linens. The curtains were very dusty and the rug had a moldy smell. No window view to the sea. The toilet did not flush well.

For all the experiences I have had of staying in hotels throughout the country, I felt cheated. That room was worthed less then $100 a night. It is pretty obvious why they always have vacancy. We certaintly will NOT choose this motel again.

If you ever want to stay here ask them to show you the room first before you pay and if you do not want a dissapointment don't reserve in advance. You most probably won't get what you reserved.

  • Liked — The bed
  • Disliked — the moldy smell of the rugs was intoxicating
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask them to show you the room before you pay; do not call in a reservation if you want a top of the class room

The Beachfront White Sands is the perfect motel for the person who is looking for scientific evidence that animals are smarter than humans. Brigg, the German Shepherd, was pleasant and very smart. If only Brigg could speak, we wouldn't have had to deal with Jason, the manager, for our needs. We had to ask for extra towels (and by extra, I mean one towel for each person in the room). Whenever we stopped in to ask Jason for the towels (and yes, this did happen more than once - every day that we were there in fact - despite Jason's assurances that he could "do the math") it was clear that we were interrupting a hot game of internet pool. Additionally, Jason's attitude was very condescending - both to us and his employees. Not only is the attitude poor customer service, it was unbelievable given the fact that he asked a guest how to spell "Wellfleet" - a town about 5 miles away. Suggestion - sound it out. The hotel advertises that it has a private beach - if it is a private beach, I would suggest taking care of it. I saw two tampon applicators in the sand on the private beach - disgusting. One of the oddest things - our shower was never cleaned while we were there (4 days), however, the limited towel supply was always folded in a pretty fan shape - I think it is time to reprioritize the maid's duties. Although the price was reasonable and we had a great time in Provincetown, Jason's attitude was poor. He would be well-served to hide in the back and have his wife and dog take care of business. A side note - I had reviewed tripadvisor before our trip and had noticed that Jason had responded to some reviews. I thought, boy, that's nice that he cares enough about his establishment to respond. Now I realize that it was probably just something to do in between internet pool matches.

Definitely this hotel has seen better days. Rooms are old but generally clean. Water pressure and shower were marginal at best, no pressure. Several light fixtures did not work. Low rates but that is what you get for it. Front desk staff did not seem to understand much of what you were asking. Stayed 2 days but would not come back.

I stayed at WHite Sands over the Memorial Day Weekend and have been there in the past as well. This place is a great location -both beach & close to P'town! I just read the other reviews and wonder who might write something so bad. Sounds like the Hilton type! This area of Cape Cod is most charming for its lack of chain hotels and fast food joints. It is what helps make it SO charming. White Sands is one of those places. The rooms are clean, the owners very nice (yes she is a very beautiful mid twenties Russian girl married to a local Cape Cod guy- if that guest had asked she could have stopped her imagination right there!) & the German Shephard is a charmer as well. If you want to really experience Cape Cod at its roots, stay at White Sands and other small owner run accommodations. Just remember that you are staying at the kind of place that makes Truro & P'town what is is today - not a Hilton! Thank GOD!

This place has some nice beachs and the suite I was in was larger than I expected - quite nice. The manager was both friendly and competent.

We had a great room located right on the beach and we could run down the stairs onto the sand. The view of the Provincetown skyline from our room was awesome and the lighthouse at the tip of the Cape Cod peninsula was visible directly across Cape Cod Bay from the motel's beach. We were in heaven paddling our rented kayaks along the gentle waters of Provincetown harbor. Really cool vibe at the motel pool with many interesting people from Europe having a lot of fun. The hot tub was just the right touch after our longs days of swimming and shopping downtown. If you are into the party scene in Ptown you need to consider that this place is 2 miles from the center but we like the natural beach environment better. The motel manager is a really friendly guy and his Russian wife is absolutely charming! We will definitely be back this September.
