Despite the charming and unique decor, comfortable room and friendly staff, my husband and I cut short our scheduled two-night stay at Porches. On our first night, after an exhausting day of travel, we were awakened at midnight by post-wedding revelers partying and playing loud music in the room adjacent to ours. Although the night staff person was sympathetic and attentive to our complaints, it took three phone calls to him and two visits from him to our neighbors to quiet things down. By that time it was after 2 am and the chances of our getting a good night's sleep were shot. We were so exhausted the next day that we cut short our trip and headed home.

Porches is too small and intimate of a hotel (I guess it is technically an "inn") in our opinion to be all things to all people. Will it be party central for large groups or a small boutique get away hotel? It was a poor decision to place a couple traveling alone next to a room of people celebrating a wedding. (Porches also allowed them to hold a poolside gathering until 2 am, so late night noise was inevitable.) While the staff and management handled the problem well, it really never should have happened in the first place.

If you go and are looking for some rest and relaxation, make sure there are no large parties happening during your stay and bring your earplugs just in case.

This was my second stay at the Porches. The Inn captures the "granny chic" aesthetic, with kitschy and country mixed in a contemporary way. Lots of clever design ideas throughout the common spaces and the rooms. The beds and the linens are terrific, the sofa beds are the typical uncomfortable mattresses - - you really are better off with a 2 bedroom suite rather than a sofa bed. The pool is great and the small "bar" is a nice touch. Coffee and pastry delivered (complimentary) in the morning in a lunch pail is another clever feature. I found the staff to be relaxed but friendly and helpful. North Adams is an interesting town - rehabilitated by the Mass MOCA and now dotted with good restaurants and other amenities. It is a 10 minute drive to Williamstown, which makes for a great getaway weekend. The Mass MOCA is a wonderfully curated museum and worth the trip alone (and lunch in their cafe is terrific and casual!)

I booked the top or 2nd tier rooms for both stays, and so payed at the high end ($425 for a 2 BR and $325 for a 1 BR suite).

Porches seems to be the best option in the area and I will likely return again.

We've stayed in the Holiday Inn, which is nice too for a Mass MoCA visit, and decided to splurge the extra $60 to stay here. No complaints, and worth the extra expense for this trip. Why? Pool in the afternoon, outdoor hot tub before bed time, personable atmosphere, free NYT and Boston Globe, and great wifi.

Porches is truly a unique experience. Nestled in an enigmatic neighborhood and community, this luxury inn offers a wonderful alternative to either a large resort or a more claustrophobic B&B.
Arriving a night is a bit of a challenge but once you find the reception sign and are greeted by the friendly front desk host, it's clear that you're in a very welcoming place. Our 2 room suite was nicely appointed and we loved the mill office decor. Linens and other amenities were top notch. The continental breakfast was an unexpected assortment of nice croissant, granola, cereal and fruit. Fresh coffee and juices were served and despite our late arrival at 9:30, the staff replenished the food until closing at 10. We did not have a chance to enjoy the heated pool, but it looked lovely.

I mentioned to someone in Cape May, NJ last week that I had visited North Adams. Within seconds we said simultaneously, "PORCHES.". So we are not alone in thinking this place is the best!! Our family of four (mom, dad, 12-yr-old daughter, and 14-yr-old daughter) spent two nights in a spacious room with two queen beds (so comfortable), a sitting area, and a huge bathroom with both a roomy shower and a vintage clawfoot tub. The hotel, which was once a set of row houses for laborers at the mill, is across from Mass MoCA and you can view Xu Bing's massive phoenixes sparkling with lights from the wonderful porch at night. Other features of Porches Inn include a pool, hot tub, bath house, and outdoor firepit. Continental breakfast was tasty with ample selections and a small bar area serves cocktails that you can take out to the pool area. If you're in the area, this is a great place to stay.
