Description: The signature dish at Legal Sea Foods – really fresh fish. One of our first restaurants and still a popular lure, we are located on Route 9 in the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center. We are still keeping things fresh at our bar, our open dining room and in our take-out counter and Fish Market. Legal Sea Foods has long proven that a consistent, high quality dining experience never goes out of style. With over 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish available throughout the year as well as an award-winning wine list, there’s no doubt why legions of fans have fallen hook, line and sinker. We’ve received a boatload of accolades including “Most Popular Boston Restaurant” (Zagat, 2012/2013), “Best Seafood Restaurant” (Improper Bostonian, 2010), “Best Chowder” (Boston Magazine, 2010), “Best Seafood Restaurant” (Boston Phoenix, 2009) and the honor of serving our legendary New England Clam Chowder at every presidential inauguration since 1981.

Legal Seafoods at Chestnut Hill (like all Legal Seafoods) has predictably excellent seafood. The chicken and steaks are OK, but really, you go there for the seafood. While meals here are not inexpensive, they're worth it. New England Clam Chowder is great; Boston baked scrod is great; scallops, lobster - all are great. Go early and go on a weeknight.

Legal is a great merchandising company, but the restaurant itself seeks to be more that it is.
The food is good, the service is above average, the welcome staff is well trained, and friendly. I opine that the pricing is a bit high, and that the ambiance is that of a mid-scale, while it tries to be seen as upscale,

We've been here probably a dozen times. The food is good, not spectacular, but solid. The service on weekend nights, on the other hand is usually poor.

Again tonight, we ordered a couple of salads and our main courses, only to have the entrees show up before the salads. While the waiter who took our order was apologetic, the guy who dropped off our food seemed interested only in leaving what he had in his hands on our table, rather than listening to our complaint that we hadn't received our salads yet. The salads finally showed up, with my wife's including the cheese that she had asked them to hold.

We got a visit from the manager who offered a mild apology, noting that they were really busy. No offer to drop the salads from the bill. They certainly are busy on weekend nights, though the place has dealt with that long enough that you'd think they'd have figured that out.

If this was a one time deal, I'd overlook it, but this was at least the third similar experience I've had here on a weekend night. If you're going on a Friday or a Saturday, be forewarned.

There are a lot of new restaurants that have sprung up around Legal the past year... and most welcome. But don't think they will not dent the business of this excellent and reliable spot. Like most Legal Seafoods outposts this place delivers consistently good seafood with good service and atmosphere. If they screw up (my veggies were cold) they take care of it immediately. Like the fish market here for takeout. Best shrimp cocktail around anywhere!
