We would have never found Max & Leos had the service at the Crowne Plaza not been so awful - but we are so glad we did. Wonderful, fabulous artisan pizza. If only we could have stayed longer and tried some more. A definite highlight of our trip to Newton and we almost missed it.

Max & Leo's, a tiny restaurant at Newton Corner, has the makings of a great pizzeria. Their dough is excellent in terms of flavor and texture, and the 800 degree coal-fired oven bakes it in a flash, adding deep, smoky tones. Just one thing separates Max & Leo's from greatness: their toppings. Many are good and some are interesting, such as the Blue Ribbon pulled pork, but unfortunately some combinations simply don't come together. A common weakness in my view is the caramelized onions; they appear frequently, but are overly sweet, perhaps because of added sugar, and they end up distorting the balance of other ingredients they're supposed to complement. A range of non-tomato sauce-based toppings also might add another dimension to the menu. With a little tweaking, Max & Leo's could make the transition to greatness. In the meantime, try it--but ask them not to burn the crust!

The pizza and salad were great. The place is very small and actually only has two tables for two. They also have a bar and wall rail you can sit at. Overall very friendly service and good food.

I've only been here for lunch. Very small, only a few tables for 2 and bar seats. Pizza is delicious and can be shared, they have beer/wine. Sandwiches are very good as well. Staff is friendly and attentive.

Great spot to grab some food. Very small (maybe 4 tables and some counter seating) and warm from the ovens. Pizza was great. Went back 2 times on my trip! Be advised, that it's swamped during the evening dinner rush with people picking up to-go orders.
