“Terrible over priced”
Reviewed September 30, 2013

My brother and I stayed at the Essex a week or so ago. We would never recommend it to anyone. The room was small to say the least. The bathroom was even smaller. No bathtub, a shower measuring slightly more that two feet by two feet. Barely room for a toilet, the dinky shower and a standup sink with no counter. No room for the towels in the bathroom, they hung on the door. When using the toilet you had to put your hand on the wall so that your head fit in a small indent in the wall when you bent over to use the toilet paper.

No airconditioning in the room. We had to open the windows and listen to the street noise in order to cool the room down. The window had a blind that when closed did not keep out the light so that we had light in the room all night long. The room was so small there was no place to hang up clothes.

The breakfast in the morning was comprised of coffee you made yourself from a mechanical coffee maker and a bunch of muffins purchased that morning at a grocery store. There were bananas and apples as well. The cups were paper cups and plastic spoons and knives for one's use, no personnel in sight.

The nightly price was double what I would have expected, we took the room because it was turning dark and we did not want to drive in the dark and all other lodging was full. I would expect this hotel to be competing with Motel 6 and charge a similiar price.

Definitely not recommended because of the price versus what they offer.

We are sorry that these recent guests were not satisfied with their stay.

In response, it sounds like they had a standard or standard 3 type in our main building. These rooms are the original rooms on our property before our expansion in 2006. They are suitable for 1 or 2 guests and are updated yearly or as needed. They contain the basic amenities.

.
Our breakfast is self serve continental. It is available in our breakfast area of the main building from 7:30am-10:30am. Our muffins are delivered twice weekly from a local wholesale company. and our fruit is always fresh .
Many guests from the past enjoy our breakfast and convenience of our 24 hour Kuerig machine for coffee or tea. All our paper and plastic products are 100% recyclable and there is a bin provided for these in our breakfast room.

Our front desk staff may not have been at the desk at all times , as they do have other duties and guests to attend to. We do have a bell located at our front desk if this guest needed any assistance.

Thank you,
Kathy Ross

We arrived at The Essex Inn by bike and since the room wasn´t ready yet, the lady on the reception not only kept our luggage but also offered us fresh fruit from the breakfast buffet. We spent the day at Plum Island. On the way back we got a place to put the bikes at the basement. Our room was not large, but was well decorated and had all we needed. There was free coffee on the lobby the whole day. The breakfast buffet was not many options but everything was of excellent quality. Last but not least, we were just at the downtown one or two blocks from restaurants, markets etc. A great place!!!

We chose the Essex St. Inn and Suites because it is around the corner from Loretta's, the restaurant we wanted to go to for dinner in Newburyport. The parking was easy, the room was large and the people who worked there were very nice. We both slept well and the beds were comfortable. Someone helped me carry my bag up the stairs, and the breakfast was quite lovely, with lots of options.

Room Tip: I only saw our room, which was on the second floor on the corner, and it was nice and large.

As someone who has been going to Newburyport for over 10 years, this has always been an old standby. We used to stay out on Plum Island before it became the new Blue inn and the prices sky rocketed but for somewhere right in town this does the job and does it well. Nice rooms, great location, friendly staff and nice little breakfast set up. Ceia Kitchen and Bar is a great new place for diner around the corner!

Stayed here for 2 nights. The room was clean and functional for the stay although the lack of a desk and enough working sockets/plugs would be an issue for me for a longer stay. The location was really good too.

I found the breakfast poor. Plastic knives and forks, paper cups and poor quality fruit and coffee are not really appealing. However the excellent location means there are other options.

I noted in an earlier reply the manger said staff were trained to offer assistance with bags. No one offered to help me with my 3 cases.

A reasonable choice for 2 days but wouldn't want to stay much longer.

We would like to thank this guest for staying with us and taking the time to post this review.

In response, all of our plastic and paper supplies are 100% recyclable and we do have a separate barrel in our breakfast room to dispose of these items.

Our staff is trained to offer to assist with luggage and we do sincerely apologize that this was not the case in regards to this guests stay.

We do not know which room this guest stayed in to be able to inspect the electrical sockets. We will certainly keep this issue in mind incase other guests mention it.

Our fruit is delivered twice a week and we do inspect it for freshness daily. Our coffee is a self serve Kurig machine with a variety of different flavors.

Sincerely,
Kathy Ross

Since we required twin beds, our room was more modest and less expensive. The bathroom was a postage stamp, even in comparison with similar historic inns I've stayed at. Continental breakfast was dismal-- mold on my English muffin, and "old" bananas, but fresh yoghurt, cereals, bagels, etc... Hey, mold happens, and the staff apologized, but it just seems their operations need improvement. For example, no elevators, so shouldn't staff offer assistance with luggage? On the plus side, we appreciated the free parking and easy walkability to everywhere we wanted to go in Newburyport, which was a terrific getaway.

Thank you to this recent guest for there stay and taking the time to post this review. We do check all our breakfast items each time they are set out and put away for freshness . We do apologize that on this day an english muffin was overlooked. We do receive our fresh produce twice weekly. It is possible that on this day we had not yet received our supply of fresh fruit.

The reviewer is correct that we do not have elevators in any of our 3 buildings. Our staff is trained to offer to assist guests with luggage. We apologize if this was not the case in regards to this stay.

My friends and I went to Newburyport to celebrate my cousin Lisas' birthday..she was visiting from VA.

She had a fabulous time visiting from VA...(3 fun filled days in historic and beautiful Newburyport with great friends)
Location was excellent and within walking distance to all the great Newburyport restaurants, shops and of course....the waterfront..
We loved the suite we rented because we had a fabulous rooftop deck...
We went to the beach during the day at Plum Island...went out to dinner and walked around and then looked forward to hanging out on the deck that evening..The weather was beautiful and we enjoyed the weekend!
Here is a breakdown of the pros and cons- I am only listing one con...I really had to think long and hard to come up with one because our stay was so wonderful
PROS
1-Staff- In one word AWESOME
Kathy , the Manager, is amazing. From start to finish she made sure our stay would be wonderful...From the first phone call I made to the inn- booking an awesome suite with rooftop deck- making sure all the details were taken care of with booking so check in was painless
Mark- He checked us in when we arrived. He was very friendly and made us feel welcome!
The staff working other shift were always friendly and willing to help if needed.
2-Rooms- The King suite was awesome...super comfortable plushtop beds and this room included a jacuzzi too..the deck was off of the bedroom. ( I liked using the cards to access the rooms versus using a key...very easy! )
The bathroom had good lighting (necessary for girls getting ready ..right!)

The kitchenette on first floor had stove/fridge which was great to have..the living room had pullout big couch that slept 2 comfortably ..

3-Location- Essex street is right off of State Street....you are literally in the heart of Newburyport and steps away from awesome restaurants and bars...and a nice walk to the waterfront... The beach (plum island) is only a few miles away by car..or if you are adventurous you could bike there.;....next time!

We enjoyed walking around and all the fun shops...
We loved Brine Restaurant... (awesome seafood..very different and yummy entrees such as fried oysters...salsa verda and with bacon- sounds bad - its so delicious people!)
Plum Island grill (you have to drive there..but its great after the beach)- great salads and
fish dinners...fun deck for cocktail hour
Cafe Sienna,Newburyport- Awesome capuccinos to fuel your shopping day :)

4- Price- very reasonable for really higher end property. I would stay there again in a heartbeat..

5- Amenities- They serve a continental breakfast (coffee/juice/tea/muffins/bagels/yogurt/cereal). This was available in the front lobby every morning.
We got tray with coffee and yogurt/muffin that we brought to our deck every morning.- so nice!
We also got coffee (keurig) to go which was great!
We didn't really want heavy omelettes / eggs for breakfast ..this was perfect
Plus..if you really want a big breakfast plenty of restaurants in walking distance
There is computer I believe available at lobby..but we didn't use this

6- Parking- There is parking behind property but its kind of a small lot. There is plenty of parking on the street which is what I did

CONS- Only con- No umbrella on the deck...but only really needed it because it was kind of hot both mornings we were there... That is it for cons

So if you are looking for awesome get away with friends and/or family I suggest the Essex Street Inn and Suites It is also a great place to stay if you are in town for wedding..we saw alot of people dressed up that looked like they were going to event! ...

I am from the Boston area..however if you were out of towner..this is the perfect place to stay to get to know Newburyport..the location is amazing

Room Tip: Loved the suite with rooftop deck! great to relax at the beginning and end of your day...beautiful...
