“Fresh!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 26, 2014

We have been coming to this place for years, and always loved it (but not necessarily the service). But, with what seems like new management we now are more in love with it. The staff are friendly and the right amount of attentive, they actually wait for you to actually try your meal before rushing over to see how everything is. The food is amazing it always tastes so fresh, like they have a garden somewhere out back that they pick the vegetables from. They also have a creative drink menu.

Always a nice visit!

“Lovely restaurant- Very Mediocre Food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 18, 2014

Met friends at Brown Sugar. The restaurant has all the exterior trappings of a wonderful dining spot. It is right in charming downtown Newburyport and in a lovely distinctive building with large windows. The restaurant has cozy booths and even a baby grand piano with great background jazz piano on weekends. But the food is disappointing. I've never had such blah pad thai. The cashew chicken had grizzly chicken and very few vegetables-- blah. Rice is ala carte. Everyone in our party... all four of us were disappointed. The food just doesn't have the tangy spicy sizzle of really good Thai food. No Thai coffee on the menu. No authentic Thai desserts like green tea ice cream or ginger ice cream. Would love to see this restaurant either change cuisines or get a new authentic Thai chef. This place does not deserve a Best of the Northshore award for this year. I won't return.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2013

Two of us had dinner here on a Saturday night. My noodle dish was mediocre at best. The sauce was not at all interesting. There were very few veggies. My partner's tempura's batter was quite heavy. The plate was heavy on onions, so it was like an order of onion rings one would get in a pub with a few other fried items. It was very noisy as well. We won't be returning

“Good around the edges”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2013

This was our second visit. The first time we had lunch and very much enjoyed it. This time we had dinner. The place was crowded and noisy. There were four of us and we could hardly hear each other talk. All four appetizers were terrific; all four entrees were disappointments. Even though the men had asked for medium spiciness, they were nearly unable to eat because the dishes were so hot. My own dish, a ginger curry, was nothing special. Two of our party had the drink specials, noted to be designed to accompany the food. They too were nothing special. We did not have dessert. The waitress was fine, but we waited a long time to get our food. I think the cost and the quality are not consonant. I would choose an array of appetizers, if I were to go again. However, that is unlikely.

“Delicious food ~ exceptional service!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2013

We visited the Farmer's Market in Newburyport, MA and then had lunch at Brown Sugar by the Sea Restaurant across the street. Pom, our waitress suggested Pad Thai and Chicken Satay @ $8 along with Chicken Tempura and Thai Fried Rice @ $6 for the kids (luncheon menu).

Food was absolutely delicious and our server gave exceptional service.

This was our second time at this restaurant. Highly recommended for couples and family.
