Description: Where laughter is required. Jacket & tie are not. Going out with friends or a special someone means choosing a neighborly place that feels as comfortable as home, where conversation flows as easily as a smooth cabernet. Welcome to Ceia Kitchen + Bar. A new kind of nightlife in the heart of Downtown Newburyport, introducing this area"s first extended kitchen hours for later night dining or tete-a-tete cocktails with flavorful small plates. Our exposed brick interior with mellow lighting, cozy banquets and featured cocktail bar beckon even impromptu visits to this reliable neighborly eatery where singles, dates and a posse of good friends are assured of a comfortable night out with delicious food and great company. The spirit of Ceia (pr. SAY-yah) is in the translation of our name: "supper" in Portuguese, the language of one country included among the inspiring stops of our coastal European culinary repertoire.

“Why the rave reviews?”
Reviewed August 4, 2013

This was an expensive disappointment. The server was pleasant but service was very slow. The glass of house wine was very stingy in quantity. My pasta with rabbit was dried out as though not freshly prepared.

“Creative and Delicious!”
Reviewed July 9, 2013 via mobile

This is creative dining in a very nice atmosphere. Ask for the second or third floor if you want a quieter experience. Also be aware that there is not a chicken option on the menu as of July 2013 but still worth a visit!

“Falls short on details”
Reviewed July 6, 2013

Based on several encouraging reviews, my daughter and I had dinner here recently. The Portuguese theme was very attractive and we were expecting a truly top-notch meal. First off. This is a many-floor restaurant and climbing two fairly steep flights of stairs may not be something everyone is up to. On this very warm (90+) night, the AC gave up somewhere between floors 2 and 3 and it was sweltering where we were seated. The wait staff stood in a corner fanning themselves. The food was creative (which does not necessarily translate to good), attractively presented and not very tasty. My daughter rated her pasta dish as a 7 (out of 10), but mostly for its very unusual (creative?) combination of things. On taste alone she gave it a 5. My rabbit, which I always look forward to eating, came stuffed with a very sweet cherry filling ... had I blindly taken a bite I would have guessed I was eating dessert. I am never in favor of sweet entrees. The mussels appetizer was little more than ordinary and had the unusual addition of almonds (and not enough garlic). All in all, for the money spent, I am sure Newburyport has better choices. The noise level was horrendous ... at about 2/3s full, conversation ceased to be possible.

“Inspired”
Reviewed July 6, 2013

We shared a divine late lunch here one Saturday afternoon. Great service. Visionary kitchen. Love of ingredients and excellent technique combine to produce great results. Fresh, seasonal, sumptuous, imaginative dishes. You can feel the chef's sincerity and personality in the food. That quality is hard to find. Ceia won us over. We loved it so much, we went back that night to sit at the bar for cocktails. (They get those right, too.)

“creative cuisine”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

We had an early lunch on a weekday and walked right in and were served quickly. The lunch specials were delicious, and included such seasonal delights as fresh fava beans, and baby artichokes. Husband had a handmade pasta. If we lived nearby, we'd come here again.
