Went to a wedding in Newburyport and we booked 2 rooms at the Inn. After reading some negative reviews we were concerned. We found the Inn to be just fine, both rooms in fact. The place was very clean, centrally located, good parking, friendly staff, and the room rates compared to other touristy type towns in high season. There was a complimentary continental breakfast and coffee/juice bar in a quaint room from 7-10 a.m which I found to be just fine if u wanted something quick and light. We all agreed if we were to return to the area we would stay there again. You can walk to many shops and restaurants or stay on site at the restaurant . Either way, options are plenty!

The Garrison Inn is located in the quaint town of Newburyport, my new favorite coastal enclave.

We spent four days here last weekend and experienced both the good and the bad of the property.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable visit and I liked the Garrison Inn, but if I was visiting Newburyport again, I wouldn't stay there again.

PROS:
- location: within walking distance of everything you'd want to see/do in Newburyport

- morning coffee/breakfast: some people have complained about the fact that the breakfast is not a gorge yourself, all-you-can-eat extravaganza. It's not. If that's what you're expecting, you're out of luck. Breakfast is served in a cute little side room by the hotel staff. It's set up very much like a small cafe ... they'll make you coffee, espresso, cappuccino, whatever you want. The one morning we made it down to breakfast in time, they were also serving egg & bacon sandwiches on a roll of your choice. I went with the bagel and it was a great way to start the morning.

- beds were comfortable

- air conditioning worked at all times: summer in Newburyport is HOT and HUMID. The air conditioned room was a welcome respite at the end of a muggy day.

- parking

- large room

- quiet

CONS

- bathroom: the bathroom was the biggest let down of the room. The shower was SMALL and the glass doors were rimmed in mold. It was coming off as the water hit it during the shower. The grout and caulking was also covered in mold. Unfortunately, so were the windows to the outside, which we don't think opened. The small was dank and gross and while it wasn't the worst bathing experience I've ever had, it was definitely unpleasant.

- generic decor: given the Inn's historic nature, it would have been great to have a little more character in the decorations. Our room had generic prints of black & white flowers, which didn't really match the blue rug or the common areas of the Inn. It looked like someone bought a bunch of random flower prints and tried to pass it off as art. The strange thing is, in the bathroom were prints of Mr. & Mrs. Garrison for whom the Inn was named. It would have been great to keep the historic theme running throughout the rooms and maybe used frame prints of Newburyport over the years. While the generic decor wasn't awful, I felt it was lacking.

- directions: the Inn is hard to find given the directions from Google Maps. This is not the hotels fault, but we drove around for awhile looking for Brown Street when in fact the Inn is on Brown Square. It's also not very clearly marked.

Newburyport is a great place to visit: very quaint with many good shops and restaurants. And the Garrision Inn is right in the center: you can walk almost anywhere from there.

With that said, the Garrison was disappointing. GIven the marketing hype on the website and the $180 price, I was expecting a more upscale, luxurious experience. Unfortunately, both the facility and the service are pretty uninspired.

Service at the front desk was perfunctory at best; the people who I encountered during my several night stay seemed to spend a lot of time sitting outside smoking, chatting on personal calls or gabbing with the restaurant staff. Not a professional image.

The rooms have great "bones" and could be charming, with fireplaces, high ceilings and big widows with shutters. But they need a complete update. The carpet was faded and stained, the paint was peeling, the bedspread was threadbare and the furniture was scratched and gouged. The room door was grimy inside. The bathroom looks like a 1970s renovation, with plastic tub enclosure, formica vanity and nowhere to hang a towel. Overall, the effect was pretty depressing: more roadside motel than “boutique hotel”.

The one pleasant surprise in the room was a plasma screen TV with many satellite channels.

The hotel advertises free wireless internet, but it's virtually useless as it cuts you off every 3 minutes and makes you log in again. No reason for this.

The breakfast was a pretty uninspired continental. Frustrating if you're health or diet conscious at all, as it was a sugar fest of Costco-like pastries, muffins, etc. You have to ask for what you want at a counter, which resulted in lines most mornings--even if you just wanted a cup of coffee to go. Better to just set up a buffet.

Overall, the Garrison was disappointing. There are many alternatives in town.

Reading some earlier reviews say this hotel is "ok" and some say it's good. I agree with both of those assessments. I've stayed three times in the past year always for business. The big variables in whether you like it or not is who greets you at check in and what room you get. There are some nice rooms (generally the 4th floor) and there are some less nice rooms. But overall, it's kinda hard to love or hate the Garrison -- it's pretty neutral. The location is nice, the hotel rooms are picturesque (exposed brick walls, nice windows, etc). The breakfast in the a.m. is 10% more than you'd expect. But there's nothing outstanding about the hotel.

Small hotel in downtown Newburyport, walking distance to any part of the downtown area. Greeted by a man at the front desk, neither friendly nor unfriendly. Nothing special about the room, except for the flat screen tv on the wall. Bed was comfortable but the room wasn't very inviting. The shower was noisy & old & was a very tight space, definitely needs updating. Only stayed for one night and served it's purpose as a room to sleep in. If you visit the website, I'd go by other peoples opinions rather than their overstated "refined landmark" "highly personal service" and "urban sophistication." Would rather stay in a big chain hotel than put my money here.

Booked to stay one night, decided when we arrived at the friendly reception to stay two and on entry into our great room rang down and booked all four nights of our break in the area. A charming little hotel with a great location, clean, friendly & relaxing.
Newburyport is a traditional all American town with good eating places and bars. Two excellent diners for breakfast where you can meet real Americans and discuss local & world issues. Sounds very grand but very interesting, just nice to hear what regular people think rather than the junk put out by the politicians.
Would recommend without hesitation both the Garrison Inn & Newburyport!

My husband and I stayed one night as we were in town for a surprise 40th birthday party. The "front desk" area is the size of a postage stamp and the person staffing it could barely say "hello." Not customer friendly whatsoever. Our room was clean and did have a plasma tv, but it was so far away from the bed it was hard to see and we would have rathered a tv on the bureau. No towel racks in the bathroom which was odd and the room just simply lacked charm. It was an "Anytown" USA hotel room. We specifically chose an inn as we wanted ambiance and charm, and although it's centrally located, we were sorely disappointed. I wouldn't recommend it.
