The Old Inn on the Green
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 23, 2014

The Old Inn dates back to 1760 and when you enter the building it seems like you have stepped back in time. The rooms are simply, but beautifully decorated in the spirit of the 18th century. But don't worry, the bathrooms are large and modern. Ours even had a Jacuzzi.

The village of New Marlborough is tiny and beautifully maintained, full of lovely old houses with large properties and pretty cottage gardens. You definitely feel you have entered Brigadoon, the old-time village that comes back to earth for one day every 100 years.

The food at the Old Inn is spectacular! The prix fixe tasting menu is divine. The a la carte menu is celestial. Service is attentive and excellent. Dinner is served entirely in candlelight. The breakfast provided with a night's stay is billed as a continental breakfast, but I don't know what continent this refers to as it includes a buffet with a panoply of fresh fruits, melons and berries, home made granola, and boiled eggs. Coffee, tea and juice are served at your table and the server also brings a basket of delectable pastries, muffins, scones, etc. with butter and jam. We didn't want lunch. In the summer breakfast is served on a lovely screened-in porch on the back of the building.

There is even a swimming pool for guests to use at the Thayer House across the green from the Inn. The Thayer House, also owned by the Innkeepers offers six additional rooms.

Room Tip: The six rooms in the Thayer House across the green are larger than the rooms in the Inn and every bi...

I wanted to relax for a couple of days and this place fit the bill perfectly. A friend and I checked into room 202 and were extremely pleased with the very large bedroom with 2 double beds and modern yet charming ample bathroom. What I really enjoyed was the fact that I could step out the back door porch and have a pleasant swim with lovely espaliers surrounding it and lounge chairs surrounding the pool if you would just like to read or chat. The dinner in the enclosed porch in the evening was delightful because of the rainfall on the roof as the other guests joined in singing "Happy Birthday" to another diner and the fabulous food...really a gem of a place and we did have delicious homemade breakfast buns at the inn and ate lunch at the cafe in town.

Room Tip: If creaking floors above bother you, you might ask for a room on the second floor.

We love this hotel, food fabulous! Wonderful dining experience. Great location very central.
The rooms in the annex are the nicest....very peaceful. Although it looks a little run down from the outside you won't be disappointed by the experience, we continue to return. Winters are sooo cozy here!

Room Tip: Note that some of the rooms in the main house don't have tv...so be aware when you book if this...

Originating in 1760 as a stagecoach stop, this is one of the great Inns of New England.
Owners Meredith and Peter have kept the Colonial period charm and upgraded to provided every modern convenience in this historic property. Great for a romantic get away and includes a wonderful breakfast buffet to get a great start

This review is a tad late, but stayed here over Easter weekend in April through a travelzoo deal. The accomdations were cozy. The floors creak a lot, but that is to be expected with an inn dating back to 1760! We loves using our fireplace. Peter & Meredith are just lovely. We had dinner here one of our evenings and the food was outrageous! Breakfast was also delicious. We enjoyed spending time in nearby Great Barrington, Stockbridge, and antiquing in Sheffield. We will definitely be back up in the Berkshires soon and hopefully staying at the inn again!

You must like B&B"s and antique inns. It was one of the most roomy and spacious inn I have stayed in. There are two houses the main is large with the dining accomodations, the house to the right is sleeping quarters and sitting areas to relax. The properties were built in the 1700's so it is old ,but very well taken care of. The Pkg. deal was for two nights with two breakfasts, one lunch. and one dinner. The breakfasts and dinner were at the main house and the lunch was approx. five minutes away. If you want Host to entertain you, you will only see them at the meals. there is no afternoon refreshments like some B&B's. There are rooms on the second floor in the main house, but I stayed in the detached house. Steps are steep in both houses. The food was excellent. The ad read full breakfasts, but eggs were not served. It was mainly fruit, hardboiled eggs, granola, and assorted pastries. Lunch was sandwiches & dessert. Dinner was soup or salad, entree, & dessert. They were all delicious. The Inn isn't far from Great Barrington. There is also other towns farther away. Every area gives you the old town feeling which is very enjoyable. I would return to this Inn. Mereith & Peter are accomodating& friendly, but on the shy side. You have to approach them to find out what you should do in certain situations.

Don't let the age of the buildings fool you. This Inn has all the modern amenities and is lovely. The setting is gorgeous, the rooms are lovely and there is even Chapman the house dog to keep you company at breakfast. Breakfast is buffet with lots of fruit, granola with all the fixings, hard boiled eggs and some of the most sinful pastries we had in a long time. We ate dinner in the candlelit dining room and enjoyed it immensely. Very romantic and delicious. The three course pix fixed was well worth it. The only thing to be aware of is that this is a very old building and stairs are steep and somewhat uneven. If that is a problem be sure to request a down stairs room.

Room Tip: First floor if climbing uneven steep stairs is an issue
