“Ultimate Pampering”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 14, 2011

My husband and I had just moved from our home and were waiting to move into our new home. We were both exhausted from the downsizing and packing! Shirakaba was the perfect place for us to recover and to restore our bodies and spirits to get ready for the next move. My husband had spent many years in the military in Okinawa and he loved the Japanese culture. He also got to use his Japanese. The food was great, the pampering was unbelievable and the environment was peaceful and beautiful! We're considering making this an annual tradition and returning to celebrate our anniversary. We were looking for an escape for the weekend following our son's Bar Mitzvah. We wanted to pamper ourselves, relax, sleep and have time for "us". My husband found Shirakaba on the web and knew right away that this would be a special place for us to escape from our everyday life. Louise is an exceptional hostess, taking care of every possible need or want. She even created a new ice cream - mocha with pecans - just because she wanted to do something special for me! I was able to taste test it while relaxing in the hot tub...and I felt incredibly spoiled to be able to have such care and attention focused on just us. Sadao taught us how to make our own sushi and he was a patient and kind teacher, even when I "poked" the sushi with the sharp knife instead of just gently applying pressure. :-)

We already knew we loved Japanese food and being at Shirakaba allowed us to enjoy the lifestyle for the weekend....eating in the tatami room with our chopsticks wearing our Japanese robes....all very relaxing and amazing delicious food....especially the soups!! We recommend Shriakaba for a unique, relaxing weekend away from your everyday life.

Some girlfriends and I recently were looking for something spa-like, but not terribly expensive. I happen to stumble upon Shirakaba in Google and we had NO idea what to expect. Good thing, because this is like no inn we've ever encountered! Everything from the incredible food to the amazing views, even the Japanese architecture (and toilet seats!), took us on a journey into another world. We arrived to find slippers for our feet, pressed and fitted Japanese robes for our comfort, and sake to our delight. We sipped wine in the gazebo as the sun set over the mountain, soaked in a ginger scented hot tub, ate a traditional Japanese meal which included sushi rolled by our own little hands... and a video to capture the fun!

My friends and I couldn't believe all of the treats and surprises ... and they just kept coming! I won't ruin the surprises, but I can guarantee you that Louise and Sadao must have their picture next to the definition for 'service' in the dictionary. They were above and beyond attentive. And their personalities shine through their home, colors their conversations and filled us with their friendship.

This experience was definitely worth the money spent. In thinking about it afterwards, the sushi lesson and dinner, the multi-course breakfast, the amenities and details - you are getting a whole lot of bang for your buck, and that means a lot in this economy.

I would recommend Shirakaba for anyone seeking to get away from it all, wants to travel to another land, but can't afford the flight. I am hoping to return with my husband and would even bring my kids for the adventure. We may never make it to Japan, but we are lucky enough to have found Shirakaba!

We were trying to find a unique place to go without going to far from home for our son's 20th birthday and when I saw the website for Shirakaba Guest House in the Birkshires I thought it would be a perfect place to spend with our family and celebrate our son's birthday while learning a little bit out the Japanese Culture while we were there. The house is so spacious and private and peaceful. The view from the large upper deck is wonderful and the outdoor hot tub was relaxing while the kids were using the indoor lap pool listening to music and having a great time. We all loved the Japanese robes that were provided for us and yes we all wore them all weekend. We sat Japanese style to eat, used chopsticks, enjoyed homemade green tea and ginger ice cream, eating Edaname at the gazebo, feeding the fish in the pond before entering the house. We were there in August and loved it and our kids who are teens loved it as well. We learned how to write our names in Japanese, learned some neat things and we all had such a nice time thanks to all the special perks that Louise and Sadao provided. It was my son's birthday and they decorated the house and even made a birthday cake for him. This place is magical and we can't wait to come back in the winter as Shirakaba is so close to the skiing as well, you can even see the mountain from the house - what a plus. I would rate this as #1 for service and quality and relaxation and beauty - just go and see for yourself.

Room Tip: very spacious sleeping arrangements, comfortable bed and if you prefer a more unique experience requ...

We had a great time for two days at Shirakaba. This guest house is really unique because it is actually part of Louise and Sadao's home - not a separate wing. The suite is spacious and comfortable, exactly as presented on the website. There is a deck off of the bedroom and our room led directly to the indoor pool, which we were allowed to use any time. The outdoor hot tub was fantastic - the perfect ending to a long day of sightseeing. The room has all the amenities you could want, but we loved having access to Netflix so we could continue watching a show we started before we arrived. Another favorite touch was the heated toilet seat ! The full breakfast was fabulous. You will absolutely be filled until dinnertime. The location of Shirakaba is perfect and the fall foliage view was beautiful. Most of all, Louise and Sadao are so nice and welcoming. You will feel like you are spending time with old friends, yet they also give you plenty of space and are unintrusive. We highly recommend Shirakaba and we hope to return again.

The setting is peaceful and scenic, and the experience unique. I personally liked the wearing the Japanese yukata, cotton robes

Louise and Sadao are excellent hosts who take time to personalize your trip, we are vegetarian and Louise made sure we had enough of options for breakfast, including our preference for organic foods

There is an nice cozy room on the deck to have breakfast and the Gazebo overlooking the valley is simply beautiful. Definitely recommend it for a family getaway

especially the pathway to the Gazebo is private and scenic.

Most of all i liked

We were a party of 4 with a toddler and a infant. he suites are wonderful and perfect for four people. Louise and Sadao were excellent hosts. Breakfast was amazing, you can have anything you want, however you want. Louise also provided us so many treats throughout our stay there

We loved the Shirakaba guest house and will definetly go back. The suites are wonderful and perfect for four people. Louise and Sadao were excellent hosts. Breakfast was amazing, you can have anything you want, however you want. Louise also provided us so many treats throughout our stay there. The house, property and gazaboo offerred some of the best views of the autumn leaves. Many trails close by and cute towns within 10-15 minutes.
