If you enjoy visiting historical homes, then by all means the Bidwell property is well worth your time. The home is in wonderful condition, considering that it was built in 1750...appropriately restored and maintained. The same can be said for the multiple perennial gardens beautifully planted among a series of old stone walls. And the added tour around the greater property reveals much about the original outbuildings and roads...also, involving numerous stone walls, some quite long. And for all of our tours, the guides were most well informed and easy to listen to. If you are in the Stockbridge, MA area this site needs to .be on your list of places to visit.

Extremely interesting and well done insight into life in New England since the 1700's. Well maintained.

The house was not open when we stopped by, but we walked the gardens and the woods loop. This is such a fun find for the middle of nowhere! Wow! A true old salt box colonial with beautiful perennial, vegetable and herb gardens. It appeared they do some teaching there, as there were laminated information pages around. It is worth a visit - a true gem in the woods! Don't be concerned if you feel like you are lost, this is really off the beaten path and little signage along the way... but you will find it!

History buffs and amateur gardeners will love this site tucked away in the woods of Monterey, Massachusetts. The site was the home of pastor Adonijah Bidwell dating back to 1750. The young gentleman who was our tour guide was articulate, poised and quite knowledgeable. The house, gardens and staff are a treasure. Well worth the time.

A trip to the Bidwell House in Monterey makes for an enchanting day in the Berkshires. As others have described, the house is a treasure trove of history and historical artifacts. The tour guides are very informative and extremely friendly. And the ride out to the Bidwell House and in the surrounding communities is a feast for the eyes and spirit! Wear enclosed walking shoes for the walk up a dusty short incline from the parking lot and for secure footing, some steeper stairs to the second floor inside, and for the lovely trails on the property. There is also a handicapped lot right near the entrance. We had a delicious lunch at the Monterey General Store a short ride away where there's a very nice cafe with inside tables and tables on a great, shaded deck outside overlooking a stream. Don't miss this fantastic and charming area!
