Last weekend, a friend and I showed up for the final Sunday tour 10 minutes late and they still greeted us with a smile and tour! Both guides seemed knowledgeable, and ours was particularly good at squashing 'myths,' while mixing family history with decorative and architectural facts.

The grounds deserve an extra hour as there are woodland walks and a variety of walls and small outbuildings to check out. They also supplied us with a list of on-going lectures, noting that people rarely return for two house tours. Therefore, they organize regular lectures, etc. in warmer months and holiday events in winter.

I have a vacation home close to this museum but have never visited it. This weekend we decided it was time. The best part of the museum is that they have some take you around and explain each room and the furnishings. I have been to a lot of museums and you just walk around but unless you know what you are looking at, it has no meaning. Since the house/settlement was before and during the revoluntionary war, you get a good sense of what life was like 300+ years ago. Very impressive. There is a cost for admission ($10.00 for adults) but well worth it. So happy that the restorers devoted their lives to restoring this house to it's orginal condition, including the furnishings.

This fine 1750 colonial house in the woods near Monterey, Ma, is definitely worth a visit. It has been carefully restored, but most of the architectural features both inside and out are original. Many of the the furnishings were acquired in the early l960s by two knowledgeable collector/curators, and they conform both in provenance and age with the articles that would have been found in the house in the l8th century. The curators were also able to acquire important possessions of the Bidwell family and return them to the house. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the house is its beautiful siting. Both the approach to the house and the view from the house are very fine. They preserve the rural, sylvan atmosphere that the Bidwells must have experienced in the 18th century.

The Bidwell House Museum is a farm house and lands that was the home of Reverend Bidwell the first pastor of the Tyringham/Monterey towns. Built in the 1740's it has been restored as a museum of cultural life in colonial Western Massachusetts. Its collection includes colonial items displayed in their surroundings. The gardens and grounds are planted in authentic colonial style. Historical tours by trained guides are available daily from June through October. The Museum is located a beautiful country road in Monterey MA.
