“Not what we expected”

We rented Karl's house for a 10-day time frame, to enjoy some family vacation time with our children and grandchildren. I have really struggled with what to say about this rental. It is a quaint, comfortable home nestled in the Berkshires. There are two small bedrooms (double beds) and full bath downstairs and a huge master bedroom with bathroom upstairs. Kitchen is nice, however I'm not sure how new the new appliances are. Washer and dryer in the mudroom was convenient. The screened porch is where I spent the majority of my time.

The nice TV, DVD player, etc., are all in the master bedroom, so not really a great place for a family to watch TV together.

The amenities listed indicate the place is waterfront and has a water view. Lake access would be more accurate. The house is not waterfront, nor is there a water view, at least not in July. The "shared dock" is a good 10-minute walk downhill to the water, with the last portion a literal goat path. Once you get there - the dock area is nice. There is a beautiful small public beach with picnic tables and lifeguards a 5-minute drive from the house - and this is where we spent our lake time as access to the dock was quite difficult with a young child and 2 infants. In order to get our kayaks to Karl's dock, we had to put in at the beach, and kayak to the dock in order to have them fairly close to where we were. Really, not what we expected and we told Karl when we checked in that we were pretty disappointed. I pulled up the Trip Advisor advertisement and pointed out to him the reasons we expected to have much better access to the water. He took notes, said "oh that's wrong" and indicated he would correct the advertisement - well it's 2 1/2 months later and this still has not been done. We had planned to spend a lot more time on the water, swimming, kayaking, fishing - but without easy access to the water, this was very limited.

Be forewarned that you will pay for cleaning, utilities, wood for the wood stove if you use it. We were handed a dump sticker to take our trash to the dump. We knew some of this upfront, but not all. When I questioned Karl as to how he calculated the return of our deposit, minus certain costs, he sent me a detailed explanation as to the exact costs. I would think, that with the cost of the stay what it was, that some of this would have been included.

We asked Karl to consider the round-trip we made to Great Barrington to pick up a new gas grill he purchased on our 3rd day there after we told him his grill was shot - flames shooting up as we were trying to cook our dinner. My husband spent two hours putting the grill together so we could use it. That's about 3 hours worth of time, gas and thankfully my husband is handy to put that grill together. He indicated he'd forgotten we were very gracious to do that and he would send us a further refund for that effort. To date, we have not received.

It's a cute place, and maybe if you're into the arts/music scene and don't care about lake activities it would be fine. But for lake activities, go elsewhere. The house needs some TLC but it is certainly comfortable and livable.

It's just really not what we expected.

“Autumn in the Berkshires”
Reviewed November 18, 2015 for a stay in October 2015

I took my wife and three young children up to this house for columbus day week. We had a blast. The house has a real cabin in the woods feel and is just a short walk to the lake......where Karl has a canoe for all the guests. The house was fully equipped with everything you need including toys and games for the kids. We had a great time and hope to be back in the future.

“Unplug and breathe”
Reviewed November 9, 2015 for a stay in September 2015

When looking for a house to rent in the Berkshires I began with spots in the towns. However we chose this place due to the reasonable price. As it turned out we liked the remote location with lake access and enjoyed the canoe. The towns were close enough to drive to. The upstairs suite is amazing with a king sized Tempurpedic bed, access to a second floor deck (perfect for watching the lunar eclipse that happened) and a bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub and shower jets. Even a hair dryer. Downstairs bathroom shower stall also has jets.

The kitchen was well stocked with lots of dishes, utensils, pots and baking pans. There is a bread maker, toaster, handmixer. No food processor or blender. Various baking supplies and spices are available. We ate most of our meals at the house. There is a dishwasher but it's quite small.

During our stay, the downstairs beds were quite inadequate, but the owner is planning to replace them before the next guest.

The owner told us we could do a 6 mile hike by walking down the road the house is on and making a loop. We enjoyed doing this especially the view from up higher. We also hiked up Monument Mountain. We visited an art gallery, enjoyed the corn maze, regular and mini golf all within a half an hour to an hour drive. We also enjoyed worshiping on Sunday down the hill at the Monterey church.

As stated elsewhere, you can't count on cell service and the Wi-Fi works but not really for streaming anything. If you need to stream something off the Internet, you will find yourself in the bedroom where the modem is. The upstairs bedroom has a huge TV wonderful for watching a DVD, but we couldn't get anything to stream well enough upstairs to use the TV to watch it.

Overall, a great place to unplug, enjoy nature, and rural life.
