“Great food, beautiful view”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

Loved the food and view and fellow diners at the common table. A bit expensive, but it's the vineyard.

“wish I had read trip advisor before I made a reservation. Blah, blah, blah!”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

Last year was a good experience, so I just made a reservation for our anniversary. I did not like the decor when I walked in. The waitress was very good. She gave voluminous explanations of the food. But when the food arrived, it was totally bland and disappointing. Thankfully, we had a bottle of wine to make the meal bearable. What is going on?? Are there no spices or herbs available to the "chef".?? I had a head cheese sort of appetizer which did not get any applause. My husband had some unrecognizable greens with roasted farro. Bland, bland, Blah! I ordered black sea bass. It was supposed to come with butter nut squash and mint. It came with creamed corn and yellow squash which had no flavor at all. The fish was served whole without flavor. My husband ordered fluke which he said was salty. It had the same corn milky stuff with it. The dessert was upside down cake which was dry.
When going to a restaurant, you expect to say,"Wow, that was delicious!", "This is different!", "Mmmm good". But there is nothing to say except , "The sunset was amazing!" The bill was amazing, considering what they put us through.

“Awful new chef”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

For years Beach Plum was one of our "go to " restaurants. This year they have a new chef and a new vibe. The vibe is fine although we did not enjoy drinking water out of jam jars. The food is sparse with not a lot if sides for a forty dollar entree. If you order the chicken, the entire chicken comes including the head and the feet. Same thing if you order the fish. The favors are unsophisticated and not good. It felt like the chef was a farmer with no formal cooking experience.

“Not as good as the last time”
Reviewed August 22, 2013 via mobile

The Beach Plum was our favorite restaurant on the vineyard. Our group was disappointed by the limited menu this time. The menu consisted of three fish options, rabbit and a roasted chicken for four that was served on a platter which included the feet and head. The service was not up to par as we experienced in the past. Still the most spectacular sunset. Be sure to request a tale on the patio.

“A bewildering attempt at farm-to-table that leaves you penniless!”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

We've been to the Beach Plum annually for the past 10-15 years. The remodeling of the dining room is refreshing, less stodgy than it used to be. Wood farmhouse tables were a nice welcoming aesthetic, but the hard ceilings and floors made for a deafeningly loud meal! It was hard to hear the server amid the din. On the plus side, The view is still amazing.

Menu-wise, we were perplexed by the necessity to share the majority of the dishes. I'm happy to eat family style, but the portions didn't meet our expectation, especially given the price. Over 100 dollars for a decent-sized strip steak, 5-6 boiled potatoes, an 2-3 slices of eggplant? I can cook the same at home (with an expensive CSA and sustainable meat) for under 40 bucks. The portion size made it seem like the chef doesn't want his patrons to gain weight. Finally, the sharing concept is out-of-control! I can't imagine why a roast chicken has to be served whole, for 4 people (at a whopping price!). Most restaurants would serve a spatchcocked half-bird as a single serving. God forbid your patrons can't agree what to eat!

Still, the quality was quite good and There were a few inventive gems on the menu. The pig head terrine was delightfully sweet and spicy -- would have been a 5-star review if we'd just ordered 10 portions of that!

Bottom line: if you're going to extort patrons with overpriced food so they can watch the sunset over Menemsha, people will start to catch on. I'd recommend the Beach Plum embrace the community aesthetic that they've ventured into, and re-think the 1% pricing model so we can all enjoy a good meal without cashing in our 401k!
