Menemsha Inn and Cottages
Ranked #1 of 2 Menemsha B&B and Inns
Reviewed November 5, 2006

We have stayed in a cottage at the Menemsha Inn every year for the past 16 years. It is a great place to stay, and everyone there is extremely helpful and friendly. From this "homebase" we can explore everything on the island, go to the beach (shuttle bus service from hotel to the beach), go to dinner, etc. and come back to a quiet place to relax. The view from each of the cottages is fantastic!! The wild peacocks the walk the grounds are fun to watch, too. Last summer we must have seen at least 11 little baby peacocks.

Also, the complimentary breakfast in the Inn is great.

Last year we had to go to a wedding at the Beach Plum Inn on Marthas Vinyard. My husband and I have spent summers on Nantucket forever and were not looking forward to spending the night on the Vinyard but we were stuck. The wedding booked us into a Carriage House room at the Menemsha Inn and we set out to make the best of it. To our complete suprise we fell in love with the Hotel and the fishing port of Menemsha.

It was just so wonderful to watch the sun drop into water from our private deck that we called our house guests back on Nantucket and told them we were staying another night. I just booked a return visit this spring and thought I would share our wonderful experience.

Last May boyfriend took me to the Menemsha Inn for its opening weekend. We had a magical time and this May we are heading back to be married! We love the Inn so much that I wanted to let others know about our little bit of paradise.

My husband and I just returned from a magical week at the Menemsha Inns and Cottages. It was as if we were transported back in time to a simpler America. Our carriage house room was just wonderful and watching the sun set into the ocean from our balcony was to die for. The staff organized for us to fish the striped bass derby that was begun sixty years ago..... we each caught a huge striped bass. Golfers shoud not miss Farm Neck or the Vineyard Golf Club and no one should miss the Beach Plum Restaurant. Did I mention Lucy Vincent Beach.....The most beautiful I have ever seen.....?

The setting and views from the inn are beautiful. Blue hydrangeas, pink roses, a view of the water. The breakfast is fine. We had a room that was well over $250 a night. For that we had a small bathroom and a pleasant sized room. However, when we arrived, there was a lightbulb missing from one of the four bathroom lights over the sink. Not just out. Just not there! The only thing that greeted us were two small bottles of water which were never replaced. The screen door wouldn't open without serious pulling and tugging and then not always. The clock didn't work. The second clock didn't work. We weren't left with extra toilet paper and ran out. And what they gave us as replacement was industrial paper. The blind in the bathroom which faced where people passed by was broken. There was not a pad or a pencil or a piece of paper in the desk/night table. Our soap dish was never cleaned out; so the soap sat in a pool of water until we emptied it. And we had to ask for fresh soap. The weather was hot and there are no ceiling fans; so the afternoon sun made it impossible to stay in our room during the second half of the day.

Although I looked, I never saw the manager until the last night around 11:00 PM. When I told him about our problems, he apologized( while he continued his paper work) and acted surprised; but certainly did not offer any compensation and blamed most of it on the cleaning staff and the rest on the fact that they were going to redo the rooms this winter. I travel a lot. Usually when even one thing is wrong, especially in smaller hotels, people come running to check everything out. Not so here. The young women at the desk didn't seem particularly concerned or interested in any of our problems. The screen door never did get fixed. We did get an extra fan (small table sized) which did little good. What disappointed me most was the nonchalant attitude of the front desk.

Would I go back? Probably not.... not until their service has changed. There were too many things wrong and all the little things that make you feel as if you're someplace nice were missing. I'm sorry because it's a great location and a hotel with lots of potential.

It started out great, great view, ok rooms, no AC, hard beds. Then while we were out, when we returned we discovered someone had been through all of our things. It made us feel violated that someone had gone into our room and rummaged through our suitcases and drawers. The manager left a rude note about his policy in entering guests rooms.
