Owner description: One of New England's most scenic graveyards, it affords a view of Old Marblehead, the harbor, and the sea. It was established in 1638 at the site of Marblehead’s first meeting house and is the burial site of some 600 Revolutionary soldiers, most in unmarked graves.

A friend guided me through the 18th and 19th century rows of tarnished and tilted headstones. Rock outcroppings interrupt any sense of a grid and the height and angle of the hill gives you the feeling that you are truly walking through a time of long ago. Serious research on the town's plagues, ancestry, and other demographics should definitely include the Old Burial Hill.

I was looking forward to wandering around this old colonial cemetery on a hill, with its sweeping harbor views. But I visited the week following Boston's super blizzard of Feb 2013 and the snowdrifts just prevented any real exploring. Once I stumbled in thigh-deep drifts, I realized that was as far as I could go that day. So a spring or autumn visit would surely be more productive. It was a peaceful scene though.

We enjoyed the history and symbolism in the cemetary. Especially liked the views of the town & ocean.

Steeped in history and genealogical significance, the views from the top of the hill are worth the hike too.

I have been to burial hill many times and brought out of town visitors there as well. It is not a large cemetery so you can cover a good portion in one visit. There is also a gazebo to relax in.
The tombstones are very old and from a time when the epitaphs were very important. They are readable in most cases and very telling. The stones for children are especially poignant. There is a large monument for Marblehead fishermen lost at sea.
It is right next to Red's Pond which has miniature sailboat races on Sundays (or they did.)
