“The perfect family-friendly B&B in Marblehead”
Reviewed April 4, 2014

Rarely does one find a bed and breakfast that welcomes children. Much to our delight, Ruth and Skip, proprietors of the Seagull Inn on beautiful Marblehead Neck, were not only welcoming to our two young children, but they (literally) opened their toy boxes and made our children feel as welcome as we were--which is to say, as welcome as old friends. Skip and Ruth had us cared for from the moment we walked in the door: Cocktail hour glasses of wine, snacks (including Skip's homemade cheese spread), and accompanying conversation, not to mention the sort of encouragement only friends would offer as we searched for a new house, helped us to feel at home. They even introduced us to another couple who recently relocated to Marblehead, giving us a wonderful jumpstart as we try to find our way in a new community.

What about the inn itself? The accommodations were at once luxurious and cozy, the breakfast, filling and delicious--from Ruth's scones and Skip's biscotti to fresh fruit and a variety of cereals and other delicious goodies, including homemade granola. The sea-view location was nothing short of ideal, even when the rain came down. I'll never forget our walks to Castle Rock to see the waves crash, and in the other direction, Chandler-Hovey Park, with its expansive views of the harbor, old town Marblehead and beyond. The inn and its surroundings are, in a word, magical.

The only downside was we had to leave! As my husband put it, we arrived as guests, and left as friends. We look forward to seeing a lot more of Ruth, Skip, and the Seagull Inn when we relocate to Marblehead, and will be sure to send all of our visiting friends and relatives.

Thank you, Ruth and Skip!

Room Tip: We stayed in the delightful Seabreeze Suite, which included a spacious sitting room; and the suite e...

We were greeted at the door by Ruth and Skip, the proprietors. They were very friendly and gracious. We stayed in the library suite and it was perfect for our needs. The room has a very nice (and large) bathroom attached to it. While not a very big suite, it was certainly very comfortable and had all the reading material one could handle.Breakfast was excellent with a terrific assortment of food. Overall, a great experience.

Room Tip: If you are using this B&B as a base for touring the area, the library suite should fit your need...

This has become a habit. Over Christmas, we spend 6 days at the Seagull Inn in the Library Room, wrapped in a cocoon of down comforters, emerging for a walk, or to visit with family and friends in the area, or to share an evening with Skip and Ruth, then curling up again with one of the hundreds of books that line the walls of our cozy hideaway. We arrive feeling beat up by the relentless realities of the business world, and leave restored and well-rested - with the feeling that we have spent the week with good friends. "Why can't we just live here? Mike asked mournfully as we departed from this year's visit.

What we love:
The breakfasts: (lox, cream cheese, bagels, a different pastry and fruit salad every day, granola, yogurt, home-made multi-grain rolls, yummy hot cereal, cheeses, prosciutto, hard or soft boiled eggs, juices and fabulous coffee.
The bed: (piled high with pillows and puffs of blankets, with a mattress that invites you to come back in after breakfast). Lights that are ideal for reading on both sides of the bed.
Skip and Ruth - our hosts: Well read, well-traveled and irreverent, amused by life and happy to share it with their guests. Funny, friendly and welcoming, and not "in your face".
The town: Marblehead, fabulously decorated for the holidays, is perfect for "let's get lost" walks that reveal an architectural treasure of historic homes, lovely views of the harbor, and seas full of eiders, mergansers, gulls and ducks.
I could go on, but I think you get the idea. We really recommend the Seagull Inn - but don't even think about staying in the Library Room for Christmas - its already taken.

We cannot say enough about how awesome Ruth and Skip were during our stay. From the moment we walked through the front door, Ruth and Skip were very gracious and made us feel right at home. Ruth and Skip had a wealth of information and knowledge regarding Marblehead's history along with recommending sites to see around town and for day-trips that we took to Salem and Newburyport. The continental breakfast was fresh and more than adequate every morning. The Inn itself was beautiful, very clean and tidy, and "homey". Our room, the Library Room, was very comfortable and accommodating for us. Had just enough space for us and our luggage and the private bath was quite spacious. The room featured small fridge, small coffee pot, sweet treats, and snacks, which were very much appreciated. We truly felt Ruth and Skip sincerely cared about our stay and genuinely wanted us to enjoy ourselves and to have a great time. Every night we were greeted with drinks and friendly chat around the kitchen island, which made us feel like we were at home or with friends/family. They even joined in the celebration of my birthday and our 3-year anniversary. All in all, we would highly recommend the Seagull Inn to anyone, not only for it's perfect location and quintessential B&B offerings, but more for Ruth and Skip. We will definitely be back to the Seagull Inn, hopefully sooner rather than later!

We came to the area for a wedding; but we decided to extend our weekend trip because it landed on our 1st anniversary. As everyone else has said, Ruth and Skip were both very welcoming and pleasant hosts. They made us feel very at home and helped us have a wonderful weekend. They even put some champagne in our room for our anniversary! The home is in such a beautiful area, and its a very short walk from lovely ocean views. My husband and I really enjoyed taking walks through the neighborhood. Overall, we greatly enjoyed our stay at the inn and definitely plan on returning the next time we can get out to the area!

My parents came over from UK and we went to Salem for a week trip. We stayed at the Seagull Inn just down the road from Salem and it was great. Clean, room was fine and Ruth and Skip looked after us amazingly. skip even didn't mind my 4 year old bugging him and they even hung out. Would highly recommend this B&B. oh and Marblehead is amazing too.

We were on a 10 day road trip to New England, we travelled from Ireland. We choose to stay in B&B's as we wanted to meet other American travellers and we weren't disappointed. On our arrival we met Ruth and Skipp who gave us a glass of wine and made us most welcome.
In fact we were joined by friends of theirs and we had a great evening drinking wine and snacks which Skipp made, he is an excellent cook even has written his own cook book.

On our second night one of the other guests had a great day fishing and Skipp invited us dinner to enjoy the catch, Skipp also arranges angling trips for the guests, and a great dinner enjoyed by all.
Our room was spacious and spotlessly clean we had the library room, the breakfast was wonderful. catering for all tastes, fresh scones, home made bread.

Marblehead is a great location very beautiful and near Boston, also it would be a gateway to start a tour of Maine.I would recommend the Seagull Inn without hesitation and I would go as far as to say it was one of the best B&B's that we stayed in on our visit to New England.

So a big thank you Ruth and Skip for the memories !

Room Tip: The library room was excellent.
