“Very good in budget class”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2010

Downtown Boston hotels seem to me to be crazily expensive. I was on the college visit circuit and the hotel is very well positioned close to 128/95 - though actually just west of the road rather than on the Lexington side. So good for visiting the battle sites and convenient for the boston area.

Aloft is very good value. I paid $150 a night for each of two rooms. Each room had two queen size beds so our family of four slept very comfortably.

This is a new concept hotel that is self-consciously aimed at a young Facebook-style market. But this old codger was impressed. Clearly s lot of effort has been made to take costs out of the system to ensure good rates, while preserving what people want - quiet, comfortable nights.

Pluses: very comfortable beds and good linens. Large airy rooms. Great shower and clean well-designed bathroom spaces. Free Wifi. Good gym. Clear, inexpensive phone call charges. Great large screen TV with OK number of channels. Well lit work space. Natural light through good sized windows. Fridge but no minibar - bless them. Decent fast food style snack and breakfast area - but you are going to want to eat out. Small pool. Friendly staff - but few of them (see below).

Minuses: Single receptionist/manager in fairground-style booth in lobby can get very busy and backed up. Paper cups just don't work in bathrooms - not anyway for guests who like to stand up their razor and toothbrush in a cup. you could fix a cup holder to the wall and it would work. And I am too old to do my laundry - so while it is nice to have a coin-op facility for guests, I left that behind at college. Windows don't open. Staff have to greet you with "Aloha".

But very good overall for a budget hotel - even if you are over 30.

I have stayed at the Aloft Lexington either two or three times now. Whenever I travel to the Boston area to visit our office there, we book at the Aloft.

I really enjoyed my stays here. The front desk and bar staff are pretty friendly and helpful. The hotel is very close to the highway, watch carefully for the exits because you need to go over the highway to get to the hotel ... I always get the GPS in my rental car for these kinds of things.

The hotel lobby and rooms are in the "modern retro" style - think "best of 1950s / '60s space age meets modern construction and materials. The WiFi in the rooms is free, and worked flawlessly, though streaming video was a little choppy at times.

I really liked the look of the rooms, though I would warn people that this place essentially has no closet; there is a small (and I mean small!) wardrobe with space for about 5 or 6 garments. Fortunately, there's also an iron and a small ironing board, and a hair dryer for those so inclined. I noticed that the TV had a device which allowed you to hook up computers, video games and other peripherals to play out through the LCD flatscreen, a nice modern touch.

The breakfast items in the lobby area were reasonably priced - heck, cheap even - and the bar was well stocked and well attended.

Some of the complaints I have heard about the "hard beds" were untrue, and I am a stickler for these kinds of things, being a side-sleeper myself.

My only real complaint is that you have to drive for lunch or dinner, unless you can subsist on the bar appetizer menu. There is no room service and no onsite restaurant. I drive over to Waltham for dinner, there is a great variety of places to eat and drink at over there. If you can get there early, you can also drive into Lexington proper but the restaurants over there tend to close on the early side.

I would recommend the Aloft Lexington to anyone going to the historic Lex/Concord area, for pleasure or business, so long as you have a car to drive to lunch/dinner.

First stay at Starwood's Aloft concept and I came away quite pleased (and as a Starwood Gold, I'm picky). The concept is basically hip style at a lower cost and Aloft delivers. It's a division of W but I think this is a better concept.

WHAT I LIKED: Big open lobby that features a bar (more on that later), big open seating area, food purchase area (very well done) and reception. Reception is behind a circular desk that feels more like an information desk than a traditional check-in area (and that's a good thing). Reception staff was very friendly and helpful, asking if I had stayed at Aloft before and then explaining how everything worked when I said it was my first time.

Rooms are minimalist (in the W) style, reminding me of a European boutique hotel. A little small but the furniture is fitted to maximize the space and a higher ceiling helps give the illusion of space.

Bar area is the central gathering spot (because without room service, hiding out in your room becomes a less attractive option) and well equipped. Five brands of tequila makes Talent Guy very happy. They had live music - a relatively decent guitar player playing 80s/90s rock - and a full crowd on a Thursday night. Only bar food is available, but quality was fine for bar food in a hotel.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Apparently Aloft mgmt. believes that guests either wear polyester or wrinkled clothes because there's no iron in the room. As a biz traveler, there are few higher sins a hotel can commit. I don't WANT to have to call and have one delivered! No room service is a minor inconvenience but 24/7 snacks available for purchase in the lobby provides some options.

Overall it's worth a stay at this well designed, well staffed, good value property.

Appeals to a wide group but definitely popular with younger crowd. Hotel is very modern and clean. No breakfast but you can buy coffee and rolls. Low platform beds. Great staff.

Well, the hotel itself is a trendy boutique hotel, and its clean and comfortable. Free parking. There's a nice bar. The staff were great. The coffee and teas in the rooms were great--specially made for Aloft. They had a romantic swimming pool. For me the best thing was that you could loan bicycles from the hotel for no extra charge. I went riding the trails in Lexington with my girlfriend.
Cons: Rather limited fitness center. No restaurant. The hotel is rather isolated; I guess that's a pro if you're looking for a getaway. If you like Lexington, the hotel is ideally situated; I found Lexington boring, but there is a lot of early historical American landmarks there, if that's your kind of thing. There is a wonderful 13 mile bike trail that runs to Boston, though.
Overall, the hotel itself is nice. If you don't mind the location, it's a steal. But remember, its far from the madding crowd.

Nice stay, but a few minor complaints. First the pros: great price, cool decor, and clean. Cons: tiny pool, non-complimentary b'fast or even coffee, and awkward bathroom. All in all, a good bang for the buck.
