Ranked #8 of 20 Lenox B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence

The location can't be beat; Lenox is in the middle of the Berkshires, and this inn is steps away from the shopping, restaurants, and Shakespeare & Company is walkable. I learned the hard way last year that the decent accommodations in or near Lenox are relatively pricey, but the Rookwood looks after its guests. I have new health issues, and felt completely taken care of, from the inn's very generously portioned, balanced breakfasts to the helpful binder of menus from area restaurants (I could check if there were things I could eat-- and we could plan costs). If you're gluten free or dairy free, or have other health issues, the Rookwood will look after you: they'll serve you completely safe versions of the foods everyone else is eating (e.g. very tasty waffles, french toast, parfaits and omelettes). PS the sausages are also delicious.

We had a chance to peek in all the guest rooms over the course of our stay (when empty, they are left open), and can say that they look exactly like the online photos and descriptions. My favourites online were my favourites in-person. We needed a room that was quiet, and while you could hear voices in the hall a bit, once people were in their rooms you could not hear a thing-- it was like you were the only people in the inn. The air conditioning was effective, and it was great having our own a/c (and heat) controls. We stayed in the "Tavern" room; it was small, but there was ample room for both our suitcases and also new purchases, and to sit & check email-- and there's so much to do in the area, we were barely there. As for the common rooms, we particularly enjoyed spending some late (and rainy) afternoons on the screened porch off the salon, sipping tea, enjoying the snack, staring at the trees and talking.

The only quibbles were minor, and with the quality of the accommodations and food would not matter to most people. The water pressure in the shower was weak (third floor of an old building) but even with my long hair it wasn't a problem at all. We weren't used to springy type beds, but slept well after we quickly adjusted to it. I'm only mentioning these two things in case someone's picky-- and to show this is a real review. No place is perfect-- even home has its quirks!

Lastly, the innkeeper Amy was just lovely, as was her cook. We really enjoyed spending time talking with them. That wasn't only our impression-- while we were in town, in store after store, when they heard where we were staying, they commented on how nice Amy is. We agree! And while sitting in the inn's salon, we found that even several of the other guests were nice, too.

It's not just good food, nice rooms and wonderful innkeepers that tempt people to come back-- the Rookwood is very professionally run, with an efficient registration system online, prompt replies to email queries, a good system for late arrivals, that menu binder, free wifi, parking right near the entrance to the inn, two luggage racks in the room, the well-gravelled (and thus minimal puddles and mud) parking lot, and other details. It's a small facility but I know a few big-name hotels that could learn some lessons from them.

Bottom line: if you're looking for commercial accommodations in the Berkshires, I highly recommend staying at the Rookwood. We definitely hope to return!

Accomodating staff, pleasant Victorian-style rooms (but thankfully not overly fussy), excellent breakfast fare, remarkably quiet for center of town location.

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet, most have modest garden views, second floor is more accesible

We have stayed in the Berkshires many times usually staying at the Red Lion Inn, While that hotel is not top notch I believe that you get what you pay for there. The same cannot be said for The Rockwood Inn. My husband and I thought that it was incredibly expensive for what you got .... the smallest of bathrooms, a pull out bed (for our little boy) that even made an 8-year old sore, master bed that needs to be replaced, and extremely poor lighting. It served our purpose of a place to stay but we hated paying the price of a villa in St. Barths for a 5-day stay. We will not be back.

What we loved: Proximity to Tanglewood, charm of old house, excellent private porch (in Room 4 we had half of it separated by a lattice barrier). We had rain the first night and kept the door open to the fresh breeze and the rain falling through the trees outside our door. Lenox is great, there was a big crafts fair, we checked out Kripalu, went to Jacob's Pillow for dance, took in a BSO rehearsal on a glorious Saturday morning, had chocolate at Chocolate Springs Cafe. Can't beat the location. Friendly fellow guests, friendly hostess and servers. Nice common area, space on wraparound porch and in living room to hang. Food was very good first morning, and fine the second morning. There was an afternoon snack of tea breads and cookies plus a refrigerator for guests. I would unquestionably go back.

What we think could be improved upon: Despite the wonderful porch in Rm. 4, the step down to the bathroom and the clawfoot tub (which Amy was very clear about when we reserved that room) were charming but a little inconvenient. My husband wishes the breakfasts were family style so we could meet more folks. I thought the entrance hallway needed vacuuming when we arrived. Our room itself was quite clean. All-in-all a fine spot to spend a getaway weekend in.

Room Tip: When I go back, I'll ask for a bathroom that has a modern shower. Dogs allowed on first floor.

We have been coming to the Rookwood every summer for a number of years. It is a lovely B&B right in the heart of Lenox, and easy walking distance to restaurants, shops, and parks. Tanglewood is a 5-10 minute drive. The inn is the definition of charming, with nicely decorated rooms (all different) and plenty of space indoors and out to sit and chat, read or relax. There is a buffet breakfast in the morning, and much appreciated late afternoon lemonade and cookies. Amy, the owner, and the rest of her staff are always warm and helpful; and we always feel that each year we are returning to see old friends.

We love Lenox and make it a point to attend Tanglewood at least once every summer. Our discovery of the Rookwood Inn just adds to the pleasure of the visit. We're always warmly received and cared for by Amy, Chris and the rest of the staff and look forward to our next stay. The rooms are comfortable and well appointed and the convenience of location can't be beat. None better!

We spent a long weekend at the Rookwood, centered around Tanglewood. Hard to beat the location, with a short drive to concerts, and a short walk to all Lenox has to offer. Room was clean, nicely decorated, and the inn functions smoothly and provides a delicious breakfast with fresh quiches and fruit, toast, bagels, etc. The sign-up for breakfast is a fine system, allowing for choice and no crowding on full weekends during the busy summer. We also appreciated the welcoming staff, friendly but inobtrusive, and the afternoon snacks, water, and wine glasses in the room were other nice touches.
