The location can't be beat; Lenox is in the middle of the Berkshires, and this inn is steps away from the shopping, restaurants, and Shakespeare & Company is walkable. I learned the hard way last year that the decent accommodations in or near Lenox are relatively pricey, but the Rookwood looks after its guests. I have new health issues, and felt completely taken care of, from the inn's very generously portioned, balanced breakfasts to the helpful binder of menus from area restaurants (I could check if there were things I could eat-- and we could plan costs). If you're gluten free or dairy free, or have other health issues, the Rookwood will look after you: they'll serve you completely safe versions of the foods everyone else is eating (e.g. very tasty waffles, french toast, parfaits and omelettes). PS the sausages are also delicious.
We had a chance to peek in all the guest rooms over the course of our stay (when empty, they are left open), and can say that they look exactly like the online photos and descriptions. My favourites online were my favourites in-person. We needed a room that was quiet, and while you could hear voices in the hall a bit, once people were in their rooms you could not hear a thing-- it was like you were the only people in the inn. The air conditioning was effective, and it was great having our own a/c (and heat) controls. We stayed in the "Tavern" room; it was small, but there was ample room for both our suitcases and also new purchases, and to sit & check email-- and there's so much to do in the area, we were barely there. As for the common rooms, we particularly enjoyed spending some late (and rainy) afternoons on the screened porch off the salon, sipping tea, enjoying the snack, staring at the trees and talking.
The only quibbles were minor, and with the quality of the accommodations and food would not matter to most people. The water pressure in the shower was weak (third floor of an old building) but even with my long hair it wasn't a problem at all. We weren't used to springy type beds, but slept well after we quickly adjusted to it. I'm only mentioning these two things in case someone's picky-- and to show this is a real review. No place is perfect-- even home has its quirks!
Lastly, the innkeeper Amy was just lovely, as was her cook. We really enjoyed spending time talking with them. That wasn't only our impression-- while we were in town, in store after store, when they heard where we were staying, they commented on how nice Amy is. We agree! And while sitting in the inn's salon, we found that even several of the other guests were nice, too.
It's not just good food, nice rooms and wonderful innkeepers that tempt people to come back-- the Rookwood is very professionally run, with an efficient registration system online, prompt replies to email queries, a good system for late arrivals, that menu binder, free wifi, parking right near the entrance to the inn, two luggage racks in the room, the well-gravelled (and thus minimal puddles and mud) parking lot, and other details. It's a small facility but I know a few big-name hotels that could learn some lessons from them.
Bottom line: if you're looking for commercial accommodations in the Berkshires, I highly recommend staying at the Rookwood. We definitely hope to return!
