This was our first stay at Cornell...and it won't be our last. The rooms were spotless. Comfy beds. The breakfasts were terrific. The grounds were lovely and you can eat breakfast outside. The staff were the best. They have a small tavern. And it's a short walk to downtown Lenox (although there's a steep hill to climb). Hurricane Irene hit while we were there and the staff couldn't have been nicer. Many people left before Irene arrived but we and several others hung on and the staff took great care of us. They gave us complimentary quesadillas in the afternoon and offered to move whoever wanted to into the main house so we'd all be under their wings. It was great. We'll be back.

We'd long used the Cornell as home basis during Berkshires vacations, and come away impressed by the accommodations and hospitality. After a several year hiatus, we returned to find it in decline in nearly every aspect. Everything a little older, more tired, a little shabbier. Breakfast, always a highlight, is now marginal. One thing that hasn't changed are the high prices in-season. We'll look for something else next year.

Last year my wife and I stayed at the Cornell Inn and had a very pleasant visit so we decided that we would bring our family to visit Tanglewood and once again stay at The Cornell Inn. The visit was as good as last year and we were very pleased. The breakfasts were well-prepared and plentiful. The staff was attentive and pleasant. I encourage folks who are visiting Lenox to stay at The Cornell; you will not be disappointed.

My wife and I stayed here from August 13 to August 16 and checked out a day early because we were very unhappy with our stay.

The room was shabby; cheap carpet, soiled and with gaps, threadbare towels, bulbs burnt out and generally poor lighting.

Sunday morning buffet breakfast was adequate. There seemed to be few guests for breakfast on Monday and the buffet was missing except for some fruit and cereal. We were told breakfast would be cooked to order with a choice of pancakes or a frittata. My wife had some oddly shaped pancakes and I had a sad looking frittata. On Tuesday again there was no hot buffet breakfast and my wife had to beg for some pancakes to be cooked. I settled for some toast and coffee. After my wife was served I was begrudgingly offered some scrambled eggs which I refused since I no longer had an appetite.

We requested extra towels on check in which we got only on the first day.

A bizarre occurance on Monday. Returning late afternoon to our room we found a plastic bag outside our door containing towels and sheets. Once in the room we found the bed was made but not with clean sheets and the towels were never replaced in the bathroom.

Finally, when we decided to check out a day early and I remarked that our room was somewhat shabby, it was discovered that we, in fact, were being overcharged by about $100/night. Fortunately, the overcharge was corrected.

Since this will be a pretty negative review I want to start by commending the staff for kindness, good humor and attentiveness in the face of overwhelming obstacles. The largest obstacle, as I discovered, is the fact that the inn has been owned for three years by an out-of-state bank who, judging from what I saw, has no interest in maintaining the inn.

I'm truly puzzled by the rave reviews the inn has received and which, sadly, were the basis for my choosing the inn. Given the state of things, it's quite over-priced. The overall decor looks like it kept everything that owners over the last 10-15 years had added….dusty and tacky. Rooms, while clean, are worn out. We chose a room with a deck but didn't use it--dirty chairs, peeling paint. Peeling paint and a general lack of upkeep was a problem throughout the three buildings that comprise the inn. The toilet in our bathroom was child-size (literally) and the towels had some stains. We decided to eat breakfast on the patio, again with stained placemats, dirty chairs, and a torn and ripped umbrella over the table.

This place has the potential to be a very charming place but not unless someone is willing to put some money into it. We're not really that fussy but this was unacceptable especially for the price. Don't stay here.

Amazing how many little things went wrong here. We waited a long time at the reception on 2 or 3 different occasions. They gave us nice candles in the room but no matches or lighters. We couldn't figure out how to turn the lights on. The front door of the carriage house slammed loudly every time someone came or went… quite the jarring experience for a quaint B&B. Breakfast was pretty forgettable -- it's pretty incredible how long they can make you wait for coffee. And then for coffee cups.

Then they forgot about the $150 gift certificate that we presented them when we checked in. Good thing I looked at the receipt, huh?

Like a lot of B&Bs, this place could actually be OK if there was enough staff to do all the work that needed to be done.

The accomodations and setting itself were very nice, conveniently located, but a total rip off for $275. If that's really the going rate in the Berkshires, then just keep heading north and stay in Vermont which is more beautiful and far more reasonable.

Had another enjoyable time at the Cornell Inn. This is an excellent choice for people going to the Tanglewood music festival. The inn is a very short drive to Tanglewood, making it very convenient, especially for returning after a late night concert. The inn has a tiny bar making for congenial conversation, with last call at 11 PM.

Something new--dinner on Saturday and Sunday nights. We were happy that we had a chance to try out Chef Lance's very first night of dinner service. This was especially welcome as it was a rainy evening, making a picnic at Tanglewood impossible. The salad was fresh and lovely. We tried two entrees--ham steak and chicken parm. Both were excellent.

The inn is well managed. Judith? not sure of name, on site 24/7, welcomed us. On arrival, we asked if we could get some coffee and she volunteered to make us some--It was delicious. The rooms at the inn are quite varied. The website details the room choices and, from my stays, seems to be accurate. The room called Mamie is particularly nice if adjoining two rooms/two bathrooms is needed. It was quiet with adequate air conditioning. The decor of that particular room was like a cozy fishing lodge, but cute.

There were some glitches at breakfast as the fruit salad ran out and the staff needed to prepare more. James, Monica, and Chef Lance were available and gave us just the right amount of attention. Breakfast was fruit, sausage, a vegetable quiche, toast, cheese, cereal, yogurt, and on the second day, whole wheat pancakes with blueberry sauce. There is an outdoor patio for breakfast--very pleasant with a tiny pond with fish, tables shaded with umbrellas, and attractive landscaping. We sat around there, talking and reading, well after breakfast because it was really nice.

The area around the inn is quite pretty, good for a long walk/run. Nearby is a town nature reserve for walking and a road near the inn goes straight back to a very pastoral scene via Under Mountain Road.

We had a great time--Thank you so much to the staff.
