My husband reminded me that we've been coming up to Tanglewood for 33 years, and it never gets old. There is something about the air, the mountain views, the crowd that makes the experience so spectacular. We go to many concerts but they just don't sound as good as when we hear them at Tanglewood. We only sat in the shed once - we prefer the lawn, to spread out and bring food and wine. This year we saw the celebration of John Williams 80th birthday. From the Brian Williams NBC News opening to Steven Spielberg making a surprise visit to the Army Herald trumpets playing the Olympics theme (not to mention Yo Yo Ma and James Taylor) - it was probably our best Tanglewood experience yet.

We just get lawn tickets, but what a treat it is. Beautiful cool summer evenings on the most immaculate turf I've ever seen, at a historic bucolic property with an amazing Berkshire Hills view, surrounded by waspy folks with all their fancy picnic gear (pretty entertaining people watching!). Then after sating ourselves with friends and family, everyone settles in under blankets, watches the dark take over and often times, the moon rise, as we bask in the ethereal sounds of the most exquisite classical music one can find anywhere. I'm not even the hugest fan of high brow stuff, but this scenario will convert even the most stubborn among us. It's just a lovely experience all around--IF it's not raining, which can spoil it all.

This was my first visit to Tanglewood. The whole region and the small towns surrounding it make for a great vacation. The atmosphere in the center was great. The "shed" as they call it is very quaint. It is in need of some repairs as some of the folding chairs have been replaced by regular seats which actually weren't that bad. The sounds of the BSO were just great

Hearing the Boston Symphony Orchestra play Beethoven in the Shed at Tanglewood, from a seat near the stage, is one of those life experiences you will never forget. Tanglewood is located in a beautiful, woodsy setting, close to ritzy Lenox, but the reason to go there is the music. Tanglewood attendees are a sophisticated, discerning crowd, so only the best of the world's conductors and musicians perform there. The acoustics are the best I've ever enjoyed, indoors or out - as long as I spring for the expensive seats under the triangular baffles suspended just below the ceiling just in front of the stage. There, you are immersed in glorious sound, bathed in the exquisite shimmering and velvety textures of the amazing BSO. I have never heard a program there that was anything less than wonderful, but in my opinion you have to be in the Shed, not on a blanket on the (much cheaper) lawn, to understand why Tanglewood is the place to be for classical music. If you are not picky, sure, save $60 and sit on the lawn under the stars (if you are lucky and it's not pouring), but if you have trained your ear to appreciate fine timbres and gradations of sound - if you are sensitive to the things you get only with great acoustics - then treat yourself to a seat in one of the first 12 or so rows. I think Tanglewood is mostly about sound, not visuals, so you can skip the top-tier Section 1 seats and save a bundle by sitting in the far left or right sections, as long as you are not so far back that you lose the aural sensation of sitting in the middle of the orchestra.
There are also prelude concerts at Ozawa Hall with free seating, so if you arrive by 6 pm for your 8:30 concert, Tanglewood throws in this nice bonus.
Tanglewood has the mechanics of operating such a venue down cold - lots of parking attendants, restrooms located here and there on the grounds, wheelchairs and golf carts and such for the disabled, two fine gift shops, and good choices for food and drink. There is, of course, a lot of traffic when the concert gets out, and it can be a bit frustrating getting out of the parking lot. But I keep coming back.

My husband and I were visiting the Berkshires from the West Coast, and had been told by numerous people "make sure you go to Tanglewood." We did, and had a wonderful evening. We had purchased lawn tickets ahead of time, which is a very inexpensive way to go as well as simplifying the entrance process. We shopped at local businesses, putting together our own picnic, and borrowed a blanket and lawn chairs from friends. We were so impressed with the picnics people had assembled --- many had gathered with friends and family to put together a feast, and some people even went so far as to bring tables, tablecloths, and candles. We found a spot on the lawn, and set up our picnic. As dusk hit and the concert began, we were overcome with the magic that is Tanglewood --- great music, great food, friends, and a beautiful, magical setting. The Boston Symphony Orchestra's concert of Mozart and Ravel hit the spot and the weather was perfect. All in all, a beautiful evening.
