“Exceptional...Period!”
Reviewed June 7, 2014

I have to admit I'm not a big B&B fan...give me a modern hotel with all the amenities and I'm happy. Our anniversary stay at the Devonfield Inn has completely changed my mind. My wife and I have traveled the world and have stayed in first class hotels and this Inn is as good as any with the exception that this is one of the most beautiful, restful, calming properties you'll find in the Berkshires or most anywhere else. Everything was perfect and we can't thank the owners enough for their fantastic hospitality.

Located in a beautiful area of the Berkshires, this inn has everything you'd want for your country getaway-comfortable rooms, cozy spaces for reading and TV viewing, a jar full of homemade chocolate chip cookies, shelves of books, outside seating with meadow and mountain views, and more. We ate a delicious breakfast while watching many different varieties of birds coming to the feeder. Bruce is a warm, helpful host and the staff are friendly. The inn has well-organized binders of recommended restaurants, nearby hikes, etc.

The Inn called me the morning we were to check in to ask when we would be arriving so that they could plan errands, etc. It was a friendly call that was appreciated. We were greeted by Bruce welcomed us quite warmly. He gave us a mini tour before showing us to our room, which had been upgraded without us asking. The room was very pretty and comfortable, the bathroom spotless. Bruce invited us to look at any of the rooms with open doors, so we did! All the rooms are lovely, but having a room toward the back of the house does cut down the traffic noise, which in season, must be quite heavy. The morning coffee was very good as was breakfast. The person serving breakfast (Pam? Sorry!) couldn't have been any friendlier, but wasn't intrusive. Too bad we booked only 1 night.

Thank you for your wonderful review. I advised Kim (not Pam), our Asst. Innkeeper, of your wonderful comments as well. As you know, you were upgraded from #7 to #2. FYI-the "front of the house" does not get street noise in the summer because the room is air conditioned. Although on a country road and no large trucks, one could hear the rare car that goes by if the the window if left opened. Of course that room is also priced lower since it does not have the meadow view. All of the rooms are lovely and are priced according to location/view and amenities i.e. fireplace, jetted bath, suite etc. We look forward to your future visit.

This was our first time staying at a B&B. We didn't really know what to expect.

As someone else had noted, it's not like a hotel where there are people everywhere...we often felt like we were the only ones in the whole house! That takes a little getting used to. I'm not sure if all B&B's are like that though? Coming back from dinner and walking into a quiet inn with a darkened living room, nobody around, is very different from walking into a hotel with a reception desk, perhaps music playing, a bar, people coming and going, etc.

Anyway, the location of the inn is very convenient. It's near shops and restaurants, easy to get to the highway, easy to travel to other famous Berkshire towns, etc. The grounds are also lovely. It is set on about 32 acres. Walking into the inn was stepping back into history. The beautiful doors, wide wood flooring, molding, windows....it's all just lovely. We arrived rather late on Friday evening, and found a gracious note and our keys waiting for us. Our room was one that we had from a Groupon, the Victoria, and although comfortable and clean, lacked the 'old world charm' that the other rooms and the rest of the house had. That's fine though....we still had the overall experience which was great. Next time though, I would probably upgrade to get the complete experience. The other rooms are really lovely. The owners were responsive to our needs. We did have an issue with heat the 2nd night and the owner took care of it immediately.
The breakfast room is lovely, and has a large picture window overlooking the beautiful property. Breakfast was fresh, homemade, tasty and they had great coffee. We didn't get to chat with the owners during our trip to get 'tips' like others had mentioned. They did come to say hello to everyone during breakfast, but I thought it was a much more general greeting to all of us rather than individualized and personal. I'm sure they would have been happy to answer anyone's questions however. We look forward to visiting again one day soon!

Stayed here two separate times, once in the Westinghouse Suite and once in the Penthouse Suite. The building itself is exactly what you should expect from a B&B. It's very large for a house, with stairways and extra rooms everywhere. It's quiet, too, except for the downstairs dining room at breakfast time. Not to say the place is deserted, since there are often people in the downstairs living room area, but if you want to keep to yourself you certainly can.
The rooms are the same as the rest of the house: large, well decorated, comfortable, and clean. The Penthouse is our favorite of the two, with a two person jacuzzi tub and remote-control fireplace in the bedroom, as well as a great view from the top of the inn.
The food at breakfast was great, with a good selection of cold foods (the yogurt is delicious!) and the option of the hot breakfast they're making for the day. We had scrambled eggs (with choices of spinach, feta, mushrooms, and cheddar) and toast, and then blueberry pancakes the next day.
The area around the Inn has a bunch of small and medium sized towns, as well as some standouts like the Norman Rockwell museum and the Lee Premium Outlets. Otherwise there's plenty of quaint New England shops to visit, great food (highly recommend Brava in Lenox for Tapas, and the Brickhouse Pub in Houstatonic for fried pickles). There's plenty to do, and we've only been to a fraction of the towns in our two visits.
My only regret was forgetting to raid the cookie jar during our last stay.
