Owner description: Enjoy the Northeast's most spectacular beach and follow trails and boardwalks through a landscape of sand dunes and salt marsh.

On a crisp mid-autumn afternoon I stopped at Crane Beach hoping to photograph a scenic and well-maintained beach. I wasn't disappointed, so be sure to bring a camera if you're similarly inclined. After paying $8 as a non-resident I found ample parking in a large dirt lot. Wooden stairways led over the dunes to the beach. There were convenient benches on the wooden walkway near the steps and a short leap down into the sand. The beach was nearly pristine despite the ravages of storms and what the tides often bring in. Seagulls and other shore birds were abundant. I most enjoyed the relative solitude and beauty of this jewel by the sea. I disliked nothing but having to cut my visit short to make it to a business meeting before nightfall.

We had been to the beach many times in the summer, but we decided to check it out after last weekend's blizzard. Blue sky, pounding surf and a long walk towards the Essex end of the beach. It looked like the dunes had been sheared off by the storm and it was a little tough getting down off the boardwalk, but the beach was even more breath-taking in the winter. Just a complete escape for a couple of hours. But, yes, they still charge you to enter the parking lot, even in February. It was worth it.

You can bring your dog October - April, the beach is huge so you can walk a bit and get some peace and quiet away from the sand throwing kids when it's busy :) The trustees of reservations offers a membership and parking pass so if you plan on going several times over the year it definitely pays for itself. Beautiful scenery and a gradual sandy beach. They have the best bath house and reasonably priced snack bar of any beach I've been to. A++ in my opinion

It is one of the best beaches north of Boston. It is not as far as the beaches of Cape Cod but it is in their league. Lots of good things nearby to see and good restaurants.
