Originally we planned to do "around the sound" and visit both Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. After determining that we would end up on ferries for 5 hours, we opted for the high speed ferry to Martha's Vineyard, and back.

Parking near the ferry was very easy. And since we were gone less than 6 hours, we were able to use the spots where you pay by the hour (total of $12). The high speed ferry has a small outside area on the upper floor, which was great for enjoying the view. Also a small inside area with a couple of tables for four. Downstairs there were lots of seats, and tables for six.

We had a baby stroller, plus my dog with us. The ferry worked out great. The dog loved the ride, and there was lots of room to spread out. The trip was one hour each way, which went by very quick. Looking forward to visiting Nantucket next time.

We got the traditional ferry from Hyannis to Oaks Bluff. Traditional means "very slow" but it was a beautiful day, we are tourists and we really enjoyed the 1hr 40min journey. I would not want to do this on a rough day on the seas though. We got the high speed (55min) return. Both ferries have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and ran bang on time.

For a trip to Nantucket I prefer to take the Grey Lady, the slow ferry from Hyannis, MA. Opt for the First Class Service and you get a nice private area with comfortable couches, tables and chairs and a special deck area. For the trip over they serve coffee with danish and muffins (not home made but save your appetite for lunch on the island!) and on the return trip the cash bar is open and they serve cheese and crackers. This trip may take a little longer but half the fun is just relaxing on the boat!!

I have taken this ferry several times over the last few years and it's always a smooth ride. This time we got a great spring deal for the same regular price of $72 per person that included a $25 certificate per person to be used at a restaurant on Martha's Vineyard. We chose MV chowder company and really enjoyed it!

We only had time for a day trip over to Martha's Vineyard, so we decided to take the High Speed Ferry from Hyannisport and added on a bus tour of the island. To lower the cost, we took the regular ferry for the return trip.

The ferry ride over on the Lady Martha was smooth and enjoyable. We sat in the upstairs lounge at a table and played cards and visited. It was very nice, comfortable and clean.

When we got to Oaks Bluff we were directed just down the street to catch our bus tour of the island. Since we had such limited time, I'm glad we took the tour, but it was far from "luxurious". It was in an old school bus, no a/c (which we didn't really need that day, but you would in the peek of summer) and the seats were a little cramped for two adults. My knees and my husband's knees were touching the seat in front of us.

Our guide was very good and gave a good narration the entire trip. The only stop we made was at Gay Head Lighthouse for about 30 minutes. There were restrooms there ( 50 cents per person) as well as a few touristy shops and 2 places to buy food (which we did not do). The view at the lighthouse was gorgeous.
The tour lasted about 2 1/2 hours which still gave us time to walk around Oak Bluffs and eat a leisurely lunch before heading back to Hyannisport.

We took the regular ferry back in the afternoon. It was not as smooth of a ride as the high speed ferry, but nice enough. We sat downstairs in the snack bar area at a table so we could play cards on our return trip. You could tell this ferry is older than the Lady Martha.
