“Best Brunch Outside of the City”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 26, 2013 via mobile

This is an adorable inn, which used to be the Black Fin, and has since been redecorated with some renovations. It's casual yet caters to your more sophisticated patrons of the burbs. It's my favorite brunch spot outside of Boston. Try the huevos rancheros and you won't be disappointed.

“Could have been so much better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2013

Four of us meet for dinner at least once a month and last night decided to try the Scarlet Oak Tavern in Queen Anne’s Corner in Hingham. We started with an evening special: Pea and mint soup. Tasted like bland pea soup with a hint of fresh mint; nothing to write home about. We also shared an order of Narragansett Calamari which was rather tasteless. Two of us ordered the Tavern Classic: Hanger Steak with arugula salad and rosemary truffle fries. I had ordered the steak medium rare, which apparently means somewhere between raw and rare. My friend ordered medium steak. His looked good to me: it was solidly medium rare! The steak was tender and had good flavor with wonderful marrow butter. The French fries, however, were pretty bad. Apparently someone named Rosemary took some old MacDonald fries and dipped them in truffle oil. Another of our party ordered the Lobster and Scallop Risotto. She said the risotto and the scallops were good, however, the lobster was very rare (not a good thing with lobster). The Sirloin Steak Tips were tender and had good flavor, but not, in any way, remarkable. And for dessert, the Vermont Maple Bread Pudding was as delicious as the Apple Cobbler with whiskey sauce was tasteless.
While the service was excellent and the dining room attractive, the food, while not terrible was totally forgettable with minimal attention to plating (or to the cooking preferences of the customers). And I have no idea why they have valet parking. Sad, since we are always looking for a restaurant and the tavern is only 15 minutes or so from home. Maybe we’ll try the patio for lunch some time.

“Great, great restaurant.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013

I have never had anything but positive things to say about Scarlet Oak. The food is always fresh and flavorful. A sign of a good restaurant is consistency, and Scarlet Oak never disappoints. Their breakfast buffet is awesome, but you can't beat their crab dip. Also, love the way the haddock is presented on top of corn chowder. That is always amazing, no matter how many times I order it. I have many favorites here. Let the wait staff recommend a choice and you won't be disappointed.
The service is excellent as well as the front desk staff. Love the character of this restaurant and can't wait to see the newly expanded patio area, as I love to sit outside in the warmer weather.

“Local Fave”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2013

We spend some time near here and we eat here frequently. It is a rare place that does a lot of dishes notably better than average if not very well. It is a good restaurant and a very good bar with enough TV's to watch sports. I'm not saying to come from the city to eat here, but on the south shore it's a good bet.

“Very good Easter brunch/lunch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2013

We go to the Scarlet Oak several times per year. Although it is always delicious, this was our best experience. The hostess immediately saw a member of our party might not be able to navigate the stairs and walked us to the elevator. This was the first time we were seated upstairs: which I highly recommend. It has smaller, cozier dining rooms that are just as lovely as the main dining room. Our server was excellent- skilled with a warm personality.
We had the bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin, a crab quiche ( Easter brunch menu) 10K Tuna with a fabulous wasabi sauce (seared a little too much but delicious nonetheless), Tuna tartare, beet salad and caesar salad with steak tips.
As busy as the restaurant was, the entire staff managed to give us an outstanding experience.
