“Worth a Try”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2012

After taking a late afternoon flight from Chicago to Hartford and a rainy drive to Hadley, we stopped at the Route 9 Diner for an early evening dinner. We spotted the place, while driving to the hotel.

The details: I had a pastrami Reuben Sandwich. It was OK. Not the best I've ever had, but not the worst. The pastrami was cut too thick for my taste, and there was no sauerkraut. It came with a nice portion of fries, the mandatory Reuben pickle and some thousand island dressing on the side for my sandwich. Disappointing.

My wife had a Gyro Plate, served on Pita Bread along with a Greek Salad. It was good.

NOTE: the problem with this review is that we just discovered a place not too far from our house, and the previous week we ordered the exact same things there. And they were DELICIOUS! So, this stop at the Route 9 Diner was a "comparison test" of sorts.

So, if we were in the area again, would we give Route 9 another try? Yes! The place has a great, traditional diner atmosphere; the menu is huge; the prices are right, and; the portions are not skimpy. The service was very good and, looking around at the other tables, everyone was having a very good time!

“Great Greek Diner with Hearty Food at Great Prices”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2012

Loved the atmosphere...this place screams DINER! Usually packed and there are a lot of good reasons. The menu is "ginormous" if that's even a word. All of the food is served all day long...have breakfast in 4 pm if you want and dinner at 8 am. Whatever you are in the mood for, they have on the menu. The food is hearty...big portions that most of the time you can't finish but are happy to take home for when there's more room in your stomach. Delicious, delicious desserts...you see the dessert case when you walk to be seated and sometimes you just want to start with a huge slice of lemon meringue pie, a creamy slab of cheesecake or a decadent piece of mile high chocolate cake. Cosy up to a traditional diner counter or sit on one of the many booths...you can even play music on the jukebox at your table. It's digital...but it is still a jukebox! It's a big place with lots of tables, but you will have to wait on those crowded days. Best time to eat with no waiting is when UMASS is not in session. Service is quick and friendly. Many authentic Greek and Italian items and of course great American diner classics.

“Filling on a budget, but ...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2012

Some of our favorite places to eat are little town diners. We've found that these places often care less about aesthetics but make up for it in great home style food. With this in mind we headed for Hadley's Rte 9 Diner on the Amherst line.

The menu is extensive offering breakfast, Italian and American choices. Service was excellent but the food, not so great. The meals we chose included choice of soup or salad, potato or fries and vegetable. The clam chowder came in a good sized bowl - about three times the size of the average restaurant portion but tasted more like flour than clams. More liquid than substance.

The basket of Challah (made on premises) that came with the meal was a delightful change from typical basket of store bought rolls. Excellent!

Portions on the meals were huge. One large plate held my open faced hot turkey sandwich and cranberry sauce. Turkey was thinly sliced, reminiscent of deli meat. Sides of potato (sans butter, sour cream or gravy) and frozen corn were disappointing. Husband loved his two large slices of meatloaf.

We bought enjoyed the large side of onion rings which were hot and crisp and not greasy. Very good.

Considering we were each bringing home enough leftovers for another full meal the biggest surprise was the check that arrived for a total of $33.

Overall thoughts. If they are going for the 50s diner theme their menu suggests, I'd recommend some fifties music and decor to put diners in that mind set. This is a good place to stop for a family on a budget, late night diners (open 24 hours). The filling meal we had was not great but I'm sure that there are plenty of things on the menu that are.

“Large menu, great prices”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2012 via mobile

Love the Rt 9 diner. Always have a hard time deciding what to order. Usually ends up being breakfast. Have always had fast courteous service. I definitely recommend it to families with kids, seniors or folks looking for good size portions at reasonable prices. Favorite for college students and folks traveling through the area. Many early bird specials for senior citizens.

“Nice little place right on Russell Street”

Traditional style diner across from the Marriott. Breakfast was great, huge portions of pancakes reasonably priced with real maple syrup. The regular lunch food looked really good as well. Nice friendly service
