We are committed to supporting local businesses, so we've been back to Magpie several times, but a consistent pattern has finally turned us away. It's a lovely spot and what many would call "intimate" or "cozy", though when crowded, there is very little room between tables and people waiting loom over some of the occupied tables in a way that is unpleasant. For a restaurant situated in a place with more vegetarians/vegans per capita than just about anywhere, it's strange how few options there are, and the chefs seem clueless as to how to make a vegan pizza that isn't runny or sparse of ingredients (the little family pizza joint across the street, by contrast, doesn't bat an eye and makes great vegan pizza). But the real issue is the combination of excessive cost for what you get and really bad service. Three of us had pizza and salads with three glasses of wine and paid a hundred bucks, which is ridiculous given there isn't anything particularly special about the food. Most of the wait staff we've encountered are friendly, but they tend to just drift away at some point, forget orders, neglect to refill glasses, or fail to bring a check when a party is obviously ready, so we've always come away with a bad feeling instead of having had a great evening. This was the last time.
