First time to this area. The website was very misleading. Breakfast was enjoyable. The interior and exterior was obviously rundown. Common services; bar service, ice, coffee, fireplace etc. were poor or non existing. Access to internet and centrally located. We will not return.

We booked three rooms for a two-night family stay in August 2008. The best way to describe the experience is "uneven." We feel that the Inn's website substantially overrepresents the Inn's aesthetics. Adobe Photoshop can do amazing things with a digital photo and I am wondering how much sanitizing of the photos was done. The Inn's exterior is in general disrepair and the grounds were what could best be described as partially tended. The whole exterior of the building needs to be painted (particularly the rear facing the swimming pool). The front porch could be very nice but is quite dirty with cobwebs and wooden furniture and flooring that also needs a fresh coat of paint. The swimming pool was OK, but had a ton of leaves in it. The brick sidewalk leading up to the front door needs some stone dust or mortar before someone catches a heel and gets hurt.

The main interior area on the first floor is the highlight of the Inn and generally very nice. There are a couple of parlors or sitting rooms that are very inviting. The dining area is also nice, though the website would lead you to believe there is a fully operational restaurant (which is no longer the case). Our breakfasts each day were nice, though replenishment of coffee and food was very slow in coming on day 1.

The bedrooms were the largest disappointment. We had Garden Suites 1 and 2 in the basement (and Lady Campbell on the second floor). As another reviewer noted, the basement in general smells musty. The smell in Garden 2 was overpowering and at least two family members thought it must be due to pet (or possibly child) urine in the rugs. The sofa bed in Garden 1 was uncomfortable in the extreme and the linens on it were either dirty and/or old. A cockroach patrolled the bathtub on day 2.

The prices for all of this were exorbitant relative to the quality of the accommodations, but we guess it is the forces of supply and demand at work. The place was full both nights and you need to reserve more than six months ahead to get the best places in the Berkshires on a summer weekend. We learned our lesson.

Bottom line: the Thornewood Inn has great potential, but is in dire need of about $75,000 of basic maintenance before it can justify the room rates that it currently fetches. Unless/until they do it, we'd advise trying someplace else. To end on a positive note, the staff were extremely friendly, though not always easy to find.

This was our very first time in Great Barrington. The grounds, the room, the area made for a very relaxing and enjoyable stay. Terry, David, and their staff are wonderful -- we would recommend this to anyone visiting the area. PS the coffee cake and muffins were fabulous!

My husband an I have stayed at the Thornewood Inn 3x in the past 5 years and we loved it every time. In fact, he proposed to me at the Inn in our favorite room (The Blue Bow). The Inn keepers, Dave and Terry Thorne, are very friendly, helpful and accomodating. We very much enjoy staying there and skiing at nearby Ski Butternut. The Inn has a very warm and inviting vibe that doesn't disappoint. Our favorite room the Blue Bow was recently renovated and it looks even more lovely than before.
We did have a minor issue this past visit with lady bug invasion in our room. A neighboring organic farm uses them as a natural pesticide against aphids and the lady bugs just so happened to take a liking to our room. I definitely do not like bugs at all but, I can definitely tolerate lady bugs. This invasion was a bit much in that there were probably 20+ lady bugs around the french doors in the bedroom and 20+ around the window in the bathroom. It was a bit much I have to admit but, my husband and I grinned and beared it. It is an Inn in the country so bugs and other nature are to be expected. Although the lady bugs were a mild inconvenience, we can forgive them and will definitely return due to the fact we like the Inn so much.

We passed the Thornewood Inn in Great Barrington, MA by chance and decided to stay on a whim. The place is lovely, has character and the family that runs it made us feel welcome and warm. Our 9-year-old daughter had a great time playing in the pool with the owners' granddaughters and we were content to just sit and watch, something we rarely get a chance to do. We'll most definitely return.

I'm shocked to see the negative reviews on this site about Thornewood Inn. We stayed there for two nights last week -- the inn & grounds are stunning, our room was beautifully decorated and clean, and Terry and Dave were wonderful hosts. It is true that the inn is on a main road as was mentioned by another reviewer -- but that is true of all of the lodging that we saw in Great Barrington. And we never heard traffic in our room -- only the peace and quiet of the beautiful backyard. I had a nice soak in the bathroom's jacuzzi after a cold, rainy day, and Terry cooked some of the best waffles I've ever had for breakfast. Highly recommended!

Based on the pictures on the inn's website and the price of the rooms I was a bit surprised to find that the service was below average, the inn is right on a busy road, the rooms need to be updated, and there is a serious lack of amenities.

While the rooms were clean and there was a certain charm to the place, this inn should lower its prices or spend some money to improve the overall quality.
