The Mahaiwe Theater, known now as the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, has returned to its roots in recent years as a live performance venue. This historical gem opened its doors in 1905 and has seen its fair share of famous name headliners walk across the stage for over 100 years. Primarily used as a film theater since the early days of silent films, then the "talkies" and newsreels, the Mahaiwe was rescued from potential demolition in the late 1900's and renovated to recoup much of its original splendor. Known for its excellent acoustics which allow even un-miked performers on stage to be heard from any seat in the house, the Mahaiwe is now used primarily for live performances with a smattering of vintage movies throughout the year. The seating has been revamped from 1,000 down to 700 over the years and now allows for a greater degree of comfortable enjoyment from anywhere. This is certainly a gem worth visiting.

We went for a concert in August. I had bought obstructed view tickets (there are poles) in the orchestra section on line and they were willing to exchange them for non-obstructed seats in the balcony. Theater has been renovated and is nice and functional and has some nice touches, but I didn't get the "wow" feeling that I get from some other renovated venues. They attract big-name talent to this little town! Unless there was parking that we didn't see, parking can be difficult.

We visited for the Berkshire Film Festival last year and this year. Loved the balcony seating (so old-timey). A thoughtful renovation, pleasurable viewing. Charming and comfortable. Be aware there are lots of stairs up to the balcony if you have an issue with that.

We have been to the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center for several shows, from modern dance to comedy. This is a great place to see a live performance. Having sat in the back of the balcony as well in the front of the orchestra section, the performers are easy to see from anywhere. We will surely return to see shows on the future.
