The Mahaiwe Theater, known now as the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, has returned to its roots in recent years as a live performance venue. This historical gem opened its doors in 1905 and has seen its fair share of famous name headliners walk across the stage for over 100 years. Primarily used as a film theater since the early days of silent films, then the "talkies" and newsreels, the Mahaiwe was rescued from potential demolition in the late 1900's and renovated to recoup much of its original splendor. Known for its excellent acoustics which allow even un-miked performers on stage to be heard from any seat in the house, the Mahaiwe is now used primarily for live performances with a smattering of vintage movies throughout the year. The seating has been revamped from 1,000 down to 700 over the years and now allows for a greater degree of comfortable enjoyment from anywhere. This is certainly a gem worth visiting.
