Julietta House
Ranked #13 of 17 Gloucester B&B and Inns
Reviewed January 8, 2013

We had two nights here and enjoyed it very much. The owners are friendly and easy to work with. It's a self-catered house, like in Europe. But that suits us fine as we prefer to eat on our own schedule. You rent the room, but you get the use of the living areas of the house, you could even cook a meal, but you don't need to. You don't need to because it's just steps from everything in Gloucester, and we found wonderful food right down the street. also great clubs and museums, all just a short walk away. Location, location, location. The owners even turned us on to a tiny, funky movie theatre in town, full of couches and actually the cheapest drinks in town. Check it out.

I recently stayed at the Julietta House with my husband and two small children. We had never stayed at a B&B before and were a little nervous as to what to expect. Upon first talking to the owner, I was impressed by the personal attention. She took special care to try to find the best available room to accommodate my family. Originally we were booked in the library room, however, upon arriving, we found we were upgraded to two adjoined rooms as a special courtesy. Our children were thrilled to have their own beds. Both rooms very very clean and comfortable--beds included. The bathroom was also very clean. We found the rooms quiet despite other reviews indicating traffic noise outside. The house is in walking distance of local restaurants and the 7 Seas Whale Watching Tour which I also recommend. It's true that breakfast is not provided; however, there are several little shops close by. Overall, we had a wonderful time and are thankful to the Julietta House for the upgrade!

How does this accommodation qualify as a "Bed and Breakfast" when they don't offer breakfast?

Julietta House, Casually Elegant Accommodations is a self-catered guesthouse. It's not a hotel. Not really an Inn. Not a B&B. Our house is gracious and welcoming, our rooms are very clean and comfortable. We stopped offering breakfast in 2004. We offer complimentary coffee and tea any time. You may bring in your own food and use the kitchen. You may also walk out the door to one of several breakfast shops to have two eggs with toast and bacon for less than $5/pp. The price is competitive and informed. If its ever possible to add breakfast again, I will do it.

We visit family in Gloucester frequently, but this time needed a hotel. A friend meeting us there needed one within walking distance of the train station and downtown. Julietta House is perfectly located for both. We were not familiar with the house yet, but went ahead and reserved rooms for a few days. We were very pleasantly surprised by this great place. It is a beautiful house, and is in great shape, well-kept by its owners. The hosts were welcoming and friendly. The guest rooms were very nicely appointed, and I note the especially comfortable bed. This is THE place to stay in Gloucester Town!

Julietta House is a wonderful and cozy place to relax, rest and contemplate the beauty of Gloucester, MA , the oldest fishing harbor on the east coast. It is an old charming house outside and inside. Staying there for few days I found everything I needed and more. It makes me to come back sometime soon...

My family [9 adults and 2 children] 'rented' Julietta House for a week for our semi-annual get-together. The rooms were fantastic, the kitchen facilities great, the living areas wonderful for our needs -- all very clean and a pleasure to use. The house is very convenient to Main Street where all kinds of wonderful restaurants and shops are, as well as being close enough to the Harbor for the whale watch companies. Susan gave us all kinds of tips on shopping, places to visit [and places and shops to not bother with], even though we couldn't take advantage of them all! Everyone of us would love to go back, and Julietta House would be the place for us no question. Gloucester is a wonderful town, everyone we dealt with was friendly and nice. Don't know what it would be like in the "on-season" though, not sure I would want to find out either. Cape Ann is full of so many nooks and crannies to explore. Driving along the coast in itself was great, as well as the ocean, the whales!!!

The Julietta House is a typical colonial style house with period rooms and furniture. Inside is good but the exterior is tired and deteriorating. Don't accept the Lowe Library room on the ground floor as it opens into the living room. The bathroom is not private as it opens into the kitchen corridor, so anything can be heard!
The owners seem preoccupied with other interests as booking is difficult. Calls and emails were not returned. Eventually I had to call their cell phone several times to book a room. The prearranged plan to collect keys didn't happen and I had to call them again to be let in. They seem to have lost interest with this business, are busy with other things and live elsewhere now.
Gloucester has nothing to offer other than whale watching. There are a handful of restaurants and a couple of dingy bars. Don't bother with the Crows Nest bar, its not worth the effort. Go to Portland or Boston, both just over an hour away.

Glorious Sunrises, Amazing Sunsets, Wonderous Light, Sandy Beaches, Rocky Coastline, World Class Jazz, Blues, Kareoke, Billiard Bar & Brewery, 4 Mom & Pop Italian, Several Pubs, Authentic Mexican, Thai, 2 Tea Houses, 4 Cafes, 5 Fine Dining Restaurants - ALL within two blocks of the Julietta House adorned with fresh paint the day this guest left. Then, of course there is the Stage Company, West End Theatre, CA Symphony, Kayaking, Marshes, Birding, Trails for Biking, Climbing, Walking, Running, Centuries of Architecture, Art Workshops, Galleries, Shopping, Sculpture and yes, the Maritime Heritage Center near the working waterfront with a growing pleasure fishing fleet and 3 Whale Watch Boats. Gloucester is best suited for those who avoid the crowd, are glad there are almost no fast food joints and look lovingly at the history with the depth and appreciation of the Artists Eye.
