“Best outdoor bar in Gloucester”
Reviewed July 27, 2014 via mobile

We visited the newly updated Studio restaurant and we were very impressed with the new look.

It's got a great lively atmosphere with a live piano and music. Love that they've added some large TV's as well so you can watch sports while siting at the bar (both indoor and outdoor).

I had the oysters on the half shell and they were among the best I've ever had anywhere.

The outdoor bar and deck they've added is amazing as well. Plenty of room and a great fun vibe. Will definitely be returning here often

“The New Studio: Right Track, Service Needs Help”
Reviewed July 24, 2014

Studio 51 is the new name of the former Studio restaurant on Rocky Neck in Gloucester. It has undergone a long-awaited and much-needed interior renovation. Thumbs up on the reno. It looks nice, up-to-date, but still has a local feel. My only critique on that score is that they kept the 'piano bar' from the old place, and it seems to take up too much space and be misplaced near the door.

I've been to the new Studio 51 three times. One for a weekday lunch, Saturday dinner hour, and a Sunday late dinner. I sat outside all three times, once at a tall table, and twice at the bar. The two bar experiences: great, comfortable bar stools with backs, and a large bar. Service: poor. Drinks and food: I'll get to that. So, the service: there were two women on one night, and both seemed to have poor attitudes. Was it a long, busy day? They did not seem especially welcoming nor helpful. Our area at the bar had not been cleaned since the previous patrons, and the bartender seemed put-out when I asked for a swipe with a bar cloth. She then pleaded an inability to reach it (which was true; she was short and the bar is very wide), but there was no apology or attempt to rectify the situation. That pretty much summed up her service for the evening. Let's not dwell. On another visit, the male bartender took our order and after half-filling it, inexplicably disappeared and did not come back. Yet another bartender took our food order, and a third cashed us out. The food took 45 minutes to arrive. Moving on ...
Drinks: Seemed good. Not enamored of the wine list (no reislings), but generally it's fine.
Food: The sushi is quite good. Some inventive offerings on the sushi menu, all appealing, and you can get the usuals that are not listed (such as a California roll). Worth having. Burger was perfectly fine. I ordered medium-rare, and it was more done than that. The fish and chips was cooked appropriately, but seemed a little lacking in flavor. Still, it was fine.
My only other critique about the menu is that while there seems to be an ample number of appetizers (about 15 or so), most of them seem to be more like 'small entrees' than apps you can share or nibble on with a beer.
For all this, the Studio carries a lot of promise. It is still the best deck in Gloucester, hands-down. Large, airy, etc. High and low tables with umbrellas. All good. And the inside was appealing (in case it's too hot to be outside) with views from the windows. It needs to treat every patron as if they are a local and will be returning. And I know that many are and will.

“Early days, and improvement needed”
Reviewed July 24, 2014

We've had dinner three or four times since The Studio re-opened its doors following a comprehensive restoration. There are highs and lows that will hopefully even out with time.
Positives are the good sushi and the tapas menus; negatives are the poorly trained staff and lack of organization.
The location is excellent and the deck a real winner, but the place can not cope when it gets busy and the lack of good management is really apparent.

“Pretty good!”
Reviewed July 23, 2014 via mobile

We've been twice this week. Our first night our waiter (gilbert) wAs amazing. I requested a special order- Caesar salad with shrimp & scallops - and it was "no problem"!
It was amazing - superb salad and shrimp and scallops grilled to perfection. Dessert, creme caramel, was one if the best I had ever had. Second visit 2 nights later asked off the same - forgot the shrimp but still good. Waitress seemed distracted. Had to ask for second glass of wine; she brought bill but and seemed startled when we said we wanted coffee and dessert before bill! Food great, service this time so-so.

“pricey and plain”
Reviewed July 20, 2014

ordered the breaded haddock with basmati rice and dressed greens. the haddock was good, but the portion small. the basmati rice was just plain [no butter or sauce] and the dressed greens were a pile of arugula with olive oil. for the price i was expecting more. my partner had the burger which was missing the promised onion. the hamburger itself was good but the side salad was weak - a pile of greens that looked like they came from costco. service was too laid back. the server didn't check on how we were doing until we were finished. the service station is between the front door and the door to the deck so we had to wend our way through the 3 servers standing and talking when we left. the servers need training.
