“Everything is awful except the food”
Reviewed June 8, 2008

Everything was awful except the food. We asked a really friendly guy on the street where to eat and he told us Carlo's. A 90 minute wait was filled in at the bar with a quite rude bartender and no specialty drink menu. Finally after seeing at least five large tables open with no customers we begged to be seated and saw that on the sign-in sheet about 20 people after us were seated before us. Our waiter didn't bring us waters but did bring us the wrong beers. We ordered around 830 expecting to eat and finish before the band started. They told us 9pm. The band didn't start until 9:30 and was terrible. Sounded horribly muffled. AND WE STILL DIDN'T HAVE OUR FOOD!!! We complained to our waiter, his supervisor, then the manager. We got several excuses; one being a chef's father died two weeks before and they were still reeling. When we got our food we were no longer hungry. We figured the sight of food would help us only we couldn't see if our food was appetizing because there were no lights anywhere. I easily missed the shrimp tail shells and my wife had to bring her plate into the light to see if hers was done the way she ordered. It wasn't. Despite my wife sending back her food, the food we did eat was great. Baked stuffed lobster - huge, succulent, fresh, buttery.
Captain's seafood casserole - sweet, buttery, filling was outrageous, i actually licked my fingers. Even though we weren't hungry and were literally seconds from walking away, food was great. But was it worth the suffering? We won't know because we won't ever be back.

“Avoid this resturant”
Reviewed July 13, 2007

The location is great and right next to the harbour with outside seating. Unfortunately the food and service were poor. We originally queued by a sign that said 'Queue Here' but were then redirected to the front of the restaurant where we queued again. We ordered Clam Chowder and my daughter a Chicken salad. There was only one fruit drink on offer for my daughter. The Clam Chowder consisted of a white mixture with tiny bits of something and was tasteless. The Fry's with my daughters salad were similar to oven chips and the Tonic Water ordered by my wife turned out to be sparkling/soda water. The service was slow and unfriendly. This restaurant is close to the excellent 'Captain Bills Whale Watching' trip make sure you keep walking when you leave this trip.

“Pleasantly Surprised”
Reviewed August 7, 2006

Visted Captain Carlos in Early June 06. We had a very pleasant
experience with our vist. The food was really good!!
We had went on the 7 Seas Whale Watch and when we returned
we went to Captain Carlos for our dinner.
Was a perfect place to just sit back relax, have a good meal, and
unwind from the day.
We had friends that were going to visit in July of 06, and this was one of the few restaurants that we recommended.
Our friends did visit Captain Carlos on their trip to Cape Ann, and they said they enjoyed as much as us. Their comment was
SOOOOO Much food......:) :)
HIghly recommend to anyone visiting Gloucester!

“Some of the best seafood ever”
Reviewed June 23, 2006

We ate at Captain Carlo's in May -- out of season -- so it was only somewhat jammed on a Saturday night. Our favorite local band was playing there -- a great scene, by the way, if you like music later in the evening -- and we wanted to have some dinner.

You need to know that during the summer months in good weather, much of the action at Captain Carlo's is outdoors. They have a big area for standing around, drinking and listening to music. At least two bars. Bands every night. It can draw a lot of people, and that would be my one concern about the restaurant. It's not very big inside, and when some of those partiers want to eat, it may put a strain on the kitchen. In other words, I don't know this from personal experience, but it may be hard to get the same quality meal in the heat of the summer that you can have the rest of the year.

Anyway, we ordered steamers to start and they were very good. You don't get many steamers for your money any more, but that's life, and not just here. These were clean, sweet and because it was a decent-sized portion, they were worth the money. Seeing the size of the portions, we split a fisherman's platter for $20. It was a mound of fried fish -- calamari, clams, shrimp and some kind of white fish. All of it was light and tasty and not greasy. It came with more than enough French fries and was as good a seafood meal as we've had anywhere. A real plus is that we were both full on one plate of food.

Our friend ordered a clam roll. It was a roll on a plate submerged in a mound of clams. I didn't find out how much it cost, but the portion was wonderful. Lobsters are a big thing here, and people seemed to be enjoying them.

The bar scene is quite good and when there's a fun band playing, it's a real party. If you're visiting Gloucester, you should at least drop by and check it out. Stay for dinner if it doesn't look too crowded.
