We went out for an early dinner the restaurant was 1/3 full through the evening. It is lovely place for dinner, and the hostess was sweet, but things quickly went downhill after. Service was so slow that some of us finished our meals before the others arrived. The waiter seemed nice but clearly has little experience with working in a restaurant (ie, getting children's meals ready first, bringing a glass for a the bottled beer, and even after a long wait for food the waiter didn't think to comp our party with drinks or dessert or something). The flavors were delightful, and the best value are the sandwich platters. They offer unusual combos of sushi that are delish but the portions are too small for the price (and I'm from NYC!) and the sushi wait is too long too. The excuse was there's only ONE person working the sushi bar, I've worked in restaurants that served sushi and that's a poor excuse. So the average rating is for the atmosphere and food flavors, but save yourself the frustration and avoid ordering from the sushi bar.

We were walking around Rocky Neck the other day and looking for a place to sit and have a cup of coffee and some light snacks. We were pleasantly surprised when we walked into the Madfish to find seating right by the window overlooking the cove. Inspired by the nice view, some members of our group decided to have a bit more to eat and ordered sushi. They were pretty pleased with what they had. Others, however, including yours truly, ordered the hummus/onion dip/salsa trio with bread/chip basket and it was really awful. The hummus had no flavor, AT ALL, and all three of the dips were way too salty. Very disappointing. We decided to try a desert and ended up with chocolate bread pudding that was not anything like bread pudding. It was hard--most likely stale--and flavorless. I suppose the icecream on the top was supposed to make the pudding underneath seem less rock-like.

Although the food wasn't worth the money, maybe you could view it as a rental fee for the the nice table looking out over that gorgeous cove. I will look forward to trying the next restaurant that comes to inhabit this space, but most likely won't come back to the Madfish Bar and Grille. Pretty sad to waste such a great location on such undistinguished food.

Great location, crappy food. They should be thoroughly ashamed of the clam chowder, what a disappointment. Fish sandwich stangely tasteless. Only highlite was the pickled red onions on the vastly overdressed salad.

I've worked in many restaurants, I am not a demanding customer.

Don't spend your money at the Madfish. There are so many other restaurants that are worthy of your patronage. Clearly, the Madfish is not one of them.

Food = bland to tasteless
Service = indifferent and rude
Management = see comments about Service
Restaurant = dirty and disorganized

Went here for dinner with my wife. The deck was very pleasant and we had a table by the window with a great view of the harbor and a light sea breeze. First we received our appetizers - littleneck clams and mussels. The mussels were good, but under-spiced. The littlenecks were inedible, just like rubber. The waitress took them back graciously, and subsequently told us that they took littlenecks off the menu for the evening, which seemed like a very good response. She brought us cups of chowder instead (gratis, which we appreciated!), and while the clams and potatoes were fresh, overall it was quite bland and a bit too thick. My wife had a crab cake which was very good, but the dipping sauce (which was interesting, made with nutmeg I think) was served under a bed of arugula rather than on the side, which made the arugula very soggy. I had the fish tacos, which were made with good fried haddock and had some nice pickled jalapeno peppers. Again, they could have used something extra to brighten them up a bit more. So apart from the problem with the littlenecks, I'd say mostly the cooks work with good ingredients and have some good ideas, but need to be more aggressive (or rather, less passive) with the spices - the food is bland. In comparison with the other restaurants in the area (The Rudder is two doors down the street), this was a disappointing meal at a fairly high price. I'm giving a 'good' rather than 'poor' because it seems they are trying, and there were some good points to the meal.
