Owner description: The Cape Ann Museum tells multiple stories, all relating to a single remarkable place. From its earliest days as a fishing and shipping port to its mid-19th century role in the granite industry, to its singular charms of light and sea that have attracted countless artists from the 19th century to the present, Cape Ann boasts a rich and varied culture of nationally significant historical, industrial, and artistic achievement. The Museum's fine art collection includes the largest grouping of works by native son and renowned marine artist, Fitz Henry Lane, as well as work by other prominent painters and sculptors who lived on, visited or were inspired by Cape Ann. The work of contemporary Cape Ann artists is also collected and exhibited. The permanent collection includes fine and decorative arts, and artifacts from the major industries of the area - the fisheries and granite quarrying. Founded in 1873 as the Cape Ann Scientific and Literary Association, today the Museum is a vibrant cultural center that includes galleries, an auditorium, library/archives, a children's activity center, two sculpture gardens and two historic homes. In addition to its permanent collections, the Museum offers a rotating schedule of special exhibitions throughout the year as well as related programs and events. Visit us today to discover the treasures of Cape Ann.

This is a small museum that does not have a lot of fanfare, pushing of membership, advertisement of them or being pretentious. What they have is a great collection of paintings of the area and from past and present artists. If you like Fritz Hugh Lane paintings you will love this place. Well worth the visit over other area museums with larger budgets and expenses..

Gloucester is North America's oldest fishing port. The significance of this is captured through art, sculpture, furniture, and incredible relics of the past that communicate the culture of this wonderful city in a moving and entertaining fashion. If possible, arrange a visit that includes a brief tour with a docent to acquire an overview of the museum. Extraordinary paintings by Fitz Henry Lane and other artists focus on what was and still is magnificent and authentic about Cape Ann. Prepare for a unique experience. You will want to return. Be sure and try one of several special small restaurants in the area to extent your visit. Passports is one of the best by any standard

If you want to get a taste of the culture and history of Cape Ann, this is the place to start. The Museum, rightfully upgraded from a local historical society within recent memory, offers galleries of art and local history. It is amazing to learn how many of our great American artists lived and or worked on Cape Ann, from Fitz Henry Lane to Edward Hopper. And of course this artistic tradition has continued, highlighted with exhibitions of contemporary artists, such as this spectacular Cape Ann Artisan show this past Spring. Perhaps my favorite room is the Folly Cove gallery that features work in various mediums by artists who are associated with this Gloucester village. Well worth a visit, and many more return trips.

The museum has interesting paintings, sculptures and other objects. We went on a guided tour with a docent. He really knew his stuff and interacted with us instead of just giving a spiel.

This museum is a visual historiography of Cape Ann. The tours are very informative and well-paced. The collection of Fitz Hugh Lane's could take a day to see, and the Folly Cover Designers exhibit shouldn't be missed.
