Owner description: Cape Ann Whale Watch in Gloucester, Massachusetts provides guaranteed whale sightings for every whale watching tour out to Stellwagen Bank, a national marine preserve about 12 miles off the coast of Gloucester deemed one of the "Top 5 Whale Watching Destinations in the World" by the World Wildlife Fund due to the wide variety of whale species whom migrate to the coast of Gloucester, Massachusetts every year to feed on the abundant natural resources. We provide the best whale watching in New England as it's an awe-inspiring experience which every human being should have the opportunity to appreciate. We make it a very special event. For over 35 years, Cape Ann Whale Watch has been dazzling whale watching enthusiasts with sightseeing tours aboard the largest, fastest and most elegant whale watching vessel in Massachusetts, north of Boston, Massachusetts aptly named "The Hurricane II" due to its immense size and speed as it descends upon its destination. Cape Ann Whale Watch's patrons have the opportunity to spend a lot more time with the whales than with other whale watching companies in Gloucester MA since "The Hurricane II" gets to the whales' feeding grounds with much more expediency as well as traveling home faster, therefore more time is actually spent observing whales including but not limited to Humpback Whales, Minke Whales, Northern Right Whales, Pilot Whales, Northern Right Whales, Sperm Whales, Sei Whales, Blue Whales (The Largest Whales in the Seven Seas yet seldom seen around Gloucester MA), Fin Whales, Atlantic White Sided Dolphins, Harbor Porpoises and whole host of other fascinating marine creatures as we deliver the best whale watching excursion in Massachusetts. "The Hurricane II" boasts 115 ft length with over 400 ft of whale watching room from the railings of the upper and lower observation decks for optimum whale watching conditions. There is a heated, furnished indoor cabin with a full service galley serving hot meals, snacks and cold beverages as well as a fully stocked bar with local brews, popular beer, wine and mixed drinks. Cape Ann Whale Watch is truly the finest whale watching tour in the Boston MA area offering the highest level of quality, comfort and service at the cheapest, most affordable price suitable for any family entertainment budget whether on vacation or a day trip. We offer AAA discounts on the adult tickets. We also offer reduced rates for seniors, children and military families. We go where the whales go. Our vessels communicate with each other as to the location of whales so we will go anywhere to see them on the North Shore or South Shore of Massachusetts including off the coast of Boston, Massachusetts: Salem MA, Newburyport, Cape Cod, Hampton NH, Rowley, Rockport MA, Danvers, Peabody, Swampscott, Revere, Winthrop or wherever else the whales may roam.

“An unforgettable experience”
Reviewed August 28, 2011

The staff were very professional and accommodating. We felt safe and in good hands.
Staff circulated around and educated us with hands on whale info. Most exciting was to actually touch real bayleen. The whales themselves were breathtaking and the staff kept us all aware on where to look when they appeared. It was absolutely amazing! My children, ages 11, 10, and 8 were not bored for a moment! The food available was also very good and there was a good selection to choose from.
I would recommend this excursion to anyone, young and old, as it is an experience we all can enjoy together.

“Late departure for afternoon trip = standing around with bored kids!”
Reviewed August 24, 2011

Same experience as RachelJoy (see other recent reviews) with the afternoon trip - the morning trip didn't even return until 2pm even though we'd been told to be sure to get there by 1:15pm as the boat would be boarding then. They had to know this is going to happen - we bought the tickets in person at around 11:00am that same day! If the boat wasn't already headed back to town, no WAY would we board by 1:15. Why not just tell us and save us nearly an hour of standing around trying to corral the kids while we wait for the boat to return?!

And lest you think both those trips mentioned here on TripAdvisor were on the same day, they were not. We went on a Sunday, so these trips were at least days apart, maybe longer (RachelJoy mentioned their trip being on a Friday). Oh, and the late return? We missed dinner reservations and were left trying to figure out where to go for walk-up dinner service.

The trip itself was acceptable, but honestly - I'd go with Seven Seas if I had it to do over again. Why, you ask? Well, their boat was ALREADY on the whales when we got there. And guess which boat left first? The Seven Seas boat was STILL there watching whales when we left. I could have kicked myself because I went back and forth between these two companies when trying to decide. Our boat seemed to spend a lot of time cruising around trying to find whales, while many of the other boats (and there were lots!) seemed to stay focused on particular whales for longer. In the end, we saw lots of whales from a long distance and very few close up. I'd rather see a few close up for a long time, personally. Quality over quantity instead, ya know?

Did we get what we paid for? Yes, we absolutely saw whales and we spent an hour, or perhaps a little less, cruising around looking for/at them. Did we get what we could have gotten for the same money? Nope, we apparently would have gotten more for our money going with the other company mentioned above. Please learn from my mistake and consider going elsewhere.

Oh, and check WHERE the whales are feeding before making any reservations. We headed down to the southern part of the Stellwagen Banks because that is where the whales were feeding. We'd have been better off leaving from a more southerly port and spending less time on the water traveling to the whales and more time actually watching them. Just something to consider if you have a choice of which town you will leave from.

“The whales did not disappoint, but not all was great”
Reviewed August 22, 2011

To start with, we got what we were promised - a full hour of up-close whale viewing. This part of the trip was fabulous. Unfortunately, some other parts were not so great.

We reserved tickets for the Friday at 1:30 PM tour. We were told to arrive by 1:00 PM. We actually got there a little bit earlier, got our boarding passes, and were told the boat would begin boarding at 1:15. We walked around the neighborhood for a few minutes, but there is really nothing there, so returned to wait. It was a very hot, sunny day, and there was no where to wait except in the parking lot. There was no shade at all, no where to sit, generally unpleasant. There was quite a crowd of people waiting, and waiting, and waiting. The morning trip did not return until 1:55 PM, so it was a long, hot, wait. If we had been told when we checked in that we would not board until 2:00 PM, we would have driven somewhere else to wait, and that would have been much more pleasant. At the very least, I would recommend they set up some sort of tent or awning so there is somewhere to wait that is not in the blazing sunshine!

So, why was the boat so late returning from the morning tour? Because it took 2 hours to get to where the whales are. Again, this in itself is not a problem. We wanted to see whales, so we had to go to where they are. However, this would have been useful information in advance. The trip is advertised as 3-4 hours. Our trip was 5 hours, and began 30 minutes late. We did not dock until 7:00 PM. Fortunately, we had nothing we were rushing to afterwards, but I'm sure some people had plans for the evening that may have been messed up. Also, had we been prepared for 4 hours of boatriding (plus 1 hour of actual whaleviewing) we would have come with more activities for our two small children. They loved seeing the whales, and they enjoyed the boat ride . . . for awhile.

Again, we really enjoyed the trip, but feel that Cape Ann Whale Watch should have provided additional information so we could have planned better. I would have come with games for the kids and packed a dinner if I'd known how late we'd come back. This would have made a generally good trip a lot better.

“Always an Incredible Experience”
Reviewed August 15, 2011

I went out on the Hurricane II again this weekend and had another great experience. They knew where the best action was and Captain Ryan found it! The naturalist, Zack, provided a wealth of information and the educators kept us informed on our way out to the whales and again on our way back. We saw dozens of whales that were open-mouth feeding, lunge feeding, kick feeding, pec slapping and breaching---Just an incredible experience!

“Had a great time!”
Reviewed August 15, 2011

I have wanted to go on a whale watch trip for a few years now and am happy to say I was not disappointed with our choice of Cape Ann Whale watch to accomplish the task. We had a great day and saw quite a few whales. I appreciated the crew's willingness to answer questions and engage us in educational opportunities. I found them to be friendly and helpful. The only complaint came from my family being cold. (It was an overcast day and a bit cooler than we anticipated on the water.) So, I would advise bringing a small blanket or two if you plan on sitting on the top tier of the boat. Although they do have a snack bar, I really appreciated the option to bring my own snacks for such a long trip. I would certainly go again.
