Blue Shutters Beachside Inn

This is our 3rd time in Gloucester and our 1st time in staying at the Blue Shutters. We loved the place with its friendly home-style feel and close to the beach locality. From the great view in our 2nd floor room to the close proximity of restaurants, shopping and beach all within walking distance, we can't say enough good about this place. Our happy experience begins with meeting our host, Ed, who recommended many dinner places and even called ahead for us letting them know we were to arrive. We stayed 3 nights and every night was enjoyable and far exceeded our expectations. Last day the weather was nice enough to wake up and take a walk during sun rise, it was lovely and so memorable. Ed was helpful in giving us advise for whatever we wanted to do or go to in Gloucester. Enjoyed friendly conversations with the people we met there. Meal at AM was basic. The view is unsurpassed. We stayed in the Nautilus room and was very comfortable and quaint. Had all that we needed. Will come again and again and again! Thanks for a very special vacation, one we will never forget.

Room Tip: We had a 2nd floor, king size bed and very comfortable, with 2 windows, small kitchen too. It was th...

We stayed for a weekend to attend a wedding just down the road at the Elks Club. It's a friendly homely establishment and we were made to feel very welcome. We had the Lookout room which was ok for us as we were out most of the time. This room has no wardrobe to hang anything up, nor any hangers to use on the hat stand. It has a microwave and fridge but no cup/mug or anything else like a plate/knife etc. There are no tea/coffee making facilities but I was offered a tea bag when I asked if I might have a coffee when we returned on the Friday evening and the hosts were still up. Coffee was not an option but I was grateful for the tea bag. Lookout room is a tightly spaced room with a sloping ceiling. My husband and I are only 5ft 3" and not grossly overweight but even we banged our heads on the ceiling above the toilet and there is little space on one side of the very soft bed to get passed the window A/C unit. Only one side of the bed can accommodate a table with lamp it is that tight. Breakfast is continental and akin to a Best Western without the hot offerings or waffles. The pastries were nice and the coffee was good, all on disposable plates/cups, but it was served til 10 am which was good. There is only one table to sit at, so if you are not a sociable morning person this could be difficult.

There is no elevator and the stairs to the third floor are quite narrow and spiral. My husband had to carry the suitcase up in his arms to get round the corner.

The views are stunning and the owners are very friendly, we weren't there to take in the beach etc and whilst we were able to walk to the wedding venue and back again, for the money spent I wished we had stayed in Rockport and felt a bit more pampered.

Room Tip: Second floor rooms seemed larger and still had sea views

When we arrived at the Blue Shutter Inn, we were immediately stuck by the beauty of the location, and the warmth & friendliness of the owners. After settling into our room, we asked the owners for some suggestions about where to eat - they not only took the time to give us great recommendations for places to eat around the cape, but actually offered us beer from the Cape Anne Brewing Company! They really made us feel at home, and gave us some wonderful suggestions. The beach across from the inn is just beautiful - my husband and I loved drinking our coffee in the front yard each morning, taking in the lovely view of the beach and ocean. It should be mentioned that our room had its quirks, such as a very tiny bathroom, but the view made up for that.

This is our second stay at Blue Shutters and we definitely plan to return. You couldn't ask for a more beautiful location, directly across the street from Good Harbor Beach so most of the rooms have a beautiful ocean view, and close enough to downtown Gloucester to easily go in for dinner or shopping. The owners are very friendly and accomodating, they have called to make dinner reservations for us, given recommendations and tips on the area, and generally made us feel like we were visiting friends rather than just staying at a hotel. The Inn itself is charming and while it isn't brand new, that is part of the charm. You can tell all of the hard work they have put into making it feel like "home" and for us it's the perfect place to relax, read a book, take some long walks on the beach, and get away from the hustle and bustle of our home for a few days.

This was my third year coming to Gloucester from Pennsylvania with my wife and daughter, to visit with her extended family from the area. The owners at the Blue Shutters have never been anything but warm and gracious to us. This year my daughter was greeted with a new small plush toy from Ann Marie as a welcome back to the Inn. The rooms are cozy and of all different shapes and sizes to meet a host of needs for a vacationing family. Breakfast is not too fancy but varied, plentiful, coffee is great. We really feel at home here, a great place to relax, reconnect with family and enjoy some fun at the beach all with a stunning view of Good Harbor Beach (just check out the webcam they have in there front window which you can see on their website).

This year especially, the family's impromptu reunion that started small three years ago at about 18 people, this year grew to 31 one evening. Without hesitation the owners helped us erect a quick rain shelter, gave us pots to cook the lobsters in and when it stopped raining built us a fire outside in the firepit. I don't know of many Inn manager/owners that would have gone to the trouble. We're not family to them, but we sure feel like.

We're booked again for next year; same time, same place. If you can get a room here when you are in Gloucester take it and you'll see what I mean.

Room Tip: If you like a room with a view, book early, they go fast.

We usually stay at the Bass Rocks and they required a 3 night stay for our weekend and we couldn't do that. So I found the Blue Shutters and i was so excited when Patty called and said they had a cancellation. We arrived Friday night greeted by Tony and Eddie, got to our room sat outside and had our pizza and a few drinks to wind down after a long drive. Loved the atmosphere. Thought WOW we like this, very nice. Then the owner Eddie comes out sits on the front steps lights up a cigarette and starts talking loudly on his cell phone. Kind of weird for an Inn owner, but ok ,we ignored it.
Then next day we step out to go to the beach and there is Eddie, and he says which car is yours,
we point it out and he says ok that is fine for now. We both look at each other like ???? Oh well. About 2 hrs later my fiancé walks up to the Inn from the beach to use our bathroom and there is Eddie sitting/leaning on his BMW ( which is his pride and joy) SO INAPPROPRIATE of an Inn Owner. To be leaning on your guests cars. Now if it was my jeep I wouldn't care much, would still find it inappropriate. But my fiancé did care. His car is something he takes very good care of. We decided to not let it bother us but at that point knew we wouldn't be returning to a place that didn't take it's customers seriously and treated their items with such little regard.
About 4pm we returned to the Inn with the parking lot full of cars, now we know why Eddie asked which car was ours. The Inn owners were entertaining their friends and family that not only took
up much of the property that should be there for guests to enjoy they were running in and out of the Inn like they were at a family function. Oh wait a minute they were. We immediately felt awkward and felt like suddenly we were in someone's house. That atmosphere we felt upon arrival for that first 30 mins was no longer there. I did mention the uncomfortableness to Tony. Just felt this place is not run like a business. The owners seem like visitors are there to see them. Way to much interaction with guests is our opinion. Some may like this we don't. Not why we vacation.
Also with our room on the main floor you could hear
everything in the main living room including the children pounding on the piano after 8pm.
We could not wait to leave that next morning, we won't be returning. Which is a shame as the
location is great.
When we go on vacation we are not looking to hang out with the owners or their family. We are
on vacation to spend quality time together. And when we pick a location this location should be serene, and relaxing. This environment was nothing like that. Would not recommend it to couples
looking to spend time together. Just not the right place for us.
