“A pleasant surprise”
Reviewed October 7, 2012

We got into Gloucester late last Monday and were hungry and trying to find a place open on Monday night and that appealed to all 5 of us was hard. We stopped in here and everyone loved their meals. The waiter was great with catering to my gluten sensitivity and those had to be the best scallops I have ever had! We will certainly go there again.

“Lovely relaxed lunch”
Reviewed October 7, 2012

We ended up at the Topside for a late lunch after our Whale Watch tour turned back due to rough seas. We came in through the side entrance which takes you into the bar. The bartender asked if we wanted the dining room, but the bar area was so attractive and quiet we just took a window seat there.

We had a beer and a hard cider for $6 each and then decided on two of the specials ($13) for lunch, both with haddock. The bartender does double duty but service was good and the fish was terrific. We were very happy with this find and definitely recommend it.

“Good Food and Drink”
Reviewed October 2, 2012

Topside is right in downtown Gloucester. I had an excellent tropical martini and we shared a very good chowder. My baked halibut, with asparagus and rice was excellent and hubby had broiled scallops which he rated average. Service was a little ditzy but more than adequate.

“Highlight of our vacation! Sept 4,2012”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

From the moment we walked in the door we received a warm, relaxed welcome - and then straight through every course - with our very sweet waitress explaining everything we needed to know in detail - it was fantastic! Authentic new England ambiance, the freshest cherrystone clams I've ever had in my life!, fabulous oyster choices-it was oyster night!, the real deal clam chowder, and what better than to top it all off with a New England specialty -grapenut custard for dessert! Can't wait to get back to this place. Read the history on the back of the menu and the son of the original owner may come out to chat with you. A very memorable and lovely experience. Wish we lived nearby, we'd be there atleast once or twice a month.

“Great place”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

After getting kicked out of the Gloucester House Restaurant (see my review of that place) we went to Topside. Right away, I liked the quiet, cozy, less frantic pace than what we encountered at GH. And the hostess greeted us with a calm smile. We explained briefly what had just occurred at the GH, and she said "there won't be a problem here." We were able to get what we wanted, and split it anyway we wanted. Not even a split charge! (I say, if this smaller place can do that, those over at the GH are just taking advantage of tourists who think they will miss something if they don't dine there.) On top of all that, the food was delicious! We would most definitely return to this place again.
