“Great New Addition to the Area”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 13, 2014

Had lunch here with a friend a month after it opened. The menu was limited, but the service was attentive and professional, food was quite good and fairly inventive for luncheon fare. The décor was stunning.
Went to dinner with 2 friends a month later on a Saturday night and was very satisfied with the service and the food. The menu is limited, but what they do they do very well. The atmosphere is pleasant and the décor is charming. The noise level was average, even though the bar was quite busy.
Two in our party had the beet salad, both were quite satisfied with the quality and quantity. The other two had the special soup of the day, which was OK, but not great. I had the scallop entrée. It was perfectly prepared. The guys both had the braised short ribs and enjoyed every last morsel. My female counterpart had the wild mushroom flatbread and she seemed to enjoy it very much. We all had chocolate mousse with rhubarb sauce for dessert and loved every bite.
I think this place is improving with time and has the potential to become a first class restaurant. The limited menu, "exotic" ingredients and higher prices are out of line with all of the other eateries in downtown Franklin, but that's a good thing. It's wonderful to finally have a quality restaurant come to town. I just wish there was more parking!

“Major disappointment - has potential”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2014 via mobile

We were attracted to this restaurant in the small rural town of Franklin because of its location, modern updated decor, and creative menu. It has all the ingredients for a fabulous dining experience except on the day we went for lunch the food fell way short of average, and when coupled with above average prices ($18 for a hamburger) it proved to be a real disappointment. My wife ordered a hamburger cooked to medium. It was delivered thick and juicy, nicely dressed and looking great on the plate but was way to raw for her taste. Our server never returned to check on our meal satisfaction but another saw the issue and she was asked for it to be cooked a little more toward medium. To their credit, rather than attempt to heat up a burger that already had ketchup on it, they delivered a freshly cooked burger. Unfortunately that one was totally raw except for the outermost crust. By now everyone else had finished eating so my wife sent it back for credit and just ate the accompanying salad. Since she had finished her wine while waiting for the two burgers she asked if she might get another 1/2 glass. They brought another full glass and charged $9 for it. The cost of the burger was deducted from the bill. My ham and cheese sandwich came on toasted French bread that seemed to be a few days old; not good enough for $9. The French Fries were perfectly prepared and delicious. The architectural detail in the interior design and restrooms is truly worthy of a first class restaurant. Unfortunately the food was not. I'd give it another try in hopes for a better experience - maybe the regular chef was off that day.

“OK, but overpriced for Dinner”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 23, 2014

My wife and I went to AK Bistro last night for dinner. Visually the atmosphere was very nice, but a few things need to be tweaked, same for any new restaurant. We had a seat in the back of the restaurant with a couch on one side of the table. This would have been fine, but the couch was about 6" lower than the chair across the table... Also, the sun was setting and the sun was in my eyes for the whole meal (no shade on the window).

The service was exceptional. No issues there.

As for the food -
Overall, the menu was very upscale, limited, and pricey. It seems like a tough sell for this market (Franklin), when so much of the food is unidentifyable (odd ingredients) to the common person and expensive. I say this having been to many upscale restaurants that could back up higher prices, in Boston or Providence. They may want to scale down a bit on more identifyiable and understandable menu selections, and slightly lower costs if they want to be successful in this market.

APPETIZER - We got a cheese (2) and meat (1) plate for an appetizer. It was delicious, the best part of our meal, but pricey at $18.

MAIN COURSE -
Bay Scallops - They were decent, but the lintels that came with them seemed like an odd pairing, and were disappointing. Also expensive at almost $30.
Rib Roast - I enjoyed this dish, but it was really just an upscale prime rib, but sliced thin. The potatoes that came with them were nothing special. Also expensive at $32 for an 8 oz portion.

“Disappointed”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 21, 2014

Wasn't crazy about the limited entrée menu, so I figured how wrong can you go with chicken Caesar salad. The chicken was bland and mushy and seemed more boiled than grilled. Although I like anchovies, their dressing was too salty. And that's all there was apart from several leaves of romaine. Not even any croutons or Parmesan cheese. If they can't handle this, I don't think I'd want to try anything else. A small disappointing salad and overpriced at that.

“Great Addition to the Area”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 20, 2014

In an area lean on sharp, quality, and higher-end cuisine (many nearby towns are like culinary frontier outposts), AK is a welcome addition. The charcuterie plate was nicely presented on chalk board, and including tender, sliced hams, pate, and house-made cornichons. The entrees of pork loin and seared scallops incorporated well-sourced ingredients and come in decent if not huge portions. The honey-seared Brussels sprouts were notably good. There's a nice take out area and cheese shop adjacent to the dining area. The atmosphere is well-appointed with a fireplace toward the back, and spacious, bright table spreads. The only areas for improvement would be to slightly expand the wine and entree selections. Prepare to spend a bit, but worth a very special night out by local standards.
