“Authentic Sichuan Cuisine in a nice place at reasonable prices”
Reviewed March 9, 2008

Sichuan Gourmet offers intensely authentic Sichuan food in a pleasant setting. The cold beef and tendon in spicy sauce appetizer offers layered flavors of star anise and other spices along with the pepper, the sichuan noodles had the right texture and flavor, the beef and napa hot pot is one of my all time favorites in any chinese place, and the old sichuan chicken offers perfectly fried tidbits of chicken smothered in mounds of hot peppers. These are uncompromising versions of classic sichuan dishes, not modified for American tastes. The menu also features well prepared versions of dishes from other regions in China, standard chinese american dishes and even Japanese dishes.

The service as efficient and friendly, the dishes arrived quickly, and the prices were moderate. The dining room decor was perfectly satisfactory.

This review is based on four visits, and here are some things I wish that I knew on my first visit......
Tip 1: Authentic sichuan dishes are the top few items of each menu section. At least that was my impression.
Tip 2: If you are not enamored of the hottest versions, ask for medium or moderate hotness and use your spoon to remove some of the concentrated peppers before mixing up the dishes.
Tip 3: If the heat is too much, use the plain steamed rice and not the water to cool down.
Tip 4: Come on the early side. The restaurant is jammed in prime dining periods, with a vibrant mixture of hungry shoppers from the nearby malls and groups of Chinese celebrating special events or just out for a good evening.

I travel a lot and have enjoyed fine Chinese food in Asia and on the west coast as well as locally. Ironically, while dining at the famous R&G in San Francisco this week, I overhead a patron at the next table argue that the Sichuan Gourmet was as good as any place in SF Chinatown. Though comparing cantonese and sichuan fare is tough, in my judgment, that patron was correct. The Sichuan Gourmet restaurant is now one of my favorites.

I've been to the Billerica location for this restaurant. It was seriously some of the best Chinese I've had. There was only one other American couple in there. Everyone else was Chinese American. Great prices & portions and really unique dishes too. Service was fast & friendly. Lots of spicy dishes.
