This is a great way to spend a few hours travelling through some gorgeous scenery. The path is flat and has no traffic on it. There is loads of wildlife on the route and there are information boards telling you what to look out for. Pack your swimmers because a section of the path runs along some gorgeous beaches.

The ride along the coast or bikeway was very scenic and pretty and we stopped to take pictures along the way

We were staying the the Dennis area on the Cape have ridden the Cape Cod rail trail in sections over the years. This year we decided to drive to Falmouth to try this one and are very glad we did. The path is about 10 miles one way from the North Falmouth trail head to Woods Hole. It was a fun ride. There was much to be seen along the way and at the 1/2 point there is a cute little gazebo where you can stop for ice cream. I especially liked the part where the path runs along Shore Dr. where you are riding a very short distance from the Nantucket Sound. It was fun to watch those playing on the rocky beach or boats going by as we road.

One thing someone did mention though was that you need to stay on the trail as poison ivy is plentiful along the path. If you are highly allergic to poison ivy beware.

Woods Hole is a quaint town. We walked around a bit before heading back. Wish I had more time to stop in Falmouth to see more of the town but we had to get back as we were meeting others for dinner and time didn't permit it.

There are bathroom facilities and places to eat clearly marked along the way near both ends of the trail but not too much in the middle.

This is the best trail on Cape Cod! Even paves, easy way to get 10+ miles of exercise while taking in beautiful scenery. Enjoy it often!

My husband and I have a small shacky house in Falmouth MA on Cape Cod where we spend a few months in the summer. The main reason that we love to come is the absolutely gorgeous Shining Sea Bikeway that runs from Woods Hole (home of several scientific institutions including the Oceanographic Institution and the Marine Biological Laboratory) to North Falmouth (a distance of about 10 miles). This bike ride takes you through canopied trails which suddenly open up to lovely marshes with tiny steams full of water birds; beside cranberry bogs just turning red; historic farms, understated Cape Cod "cottages", long stretches of beach, and friendly, happy riders. Turn down one of the many roads which the trail crosses, and you'll find yourself at one of the "warm water" beaches, Chapoquoit. Or if you turn away from the beach, you discover West Falmouth village with a coffee shop and a very fine market. (There's also a couple of great coffee shops in Woods Hole and Falmouth.)
It's lovely all hours of the day, but my favorite is early in the morning when the fall air is
exhilarating, the pace can be fast, and coffee and The New York Times await somewhere near.
