“very exclusive”
Reviewed March 6, 2014

I stayed for 4 nights at the Punta Rucia Lodge and enjoyed my whole stay there.

Punta Rucia itself is a very rural place but there are many attractions close by, for example The 1st settlement of the new world or the wonderful island Cayo Arena.

The lodge is completely new built and very exclusive. The location is wonderful at the phantastic beach of Punta Rucia and the views along the northern coast are spectacular.

The staff is very attentive and helpful, with Jabina of the front desk being the most wonderful and helpful person.

The rooms and the restaurant absolutely meet the high expectations.

Alltogether i can absolutely can recommend to stay there.

The major points:
The beach is gorgeous, the staff is amazing, the hotel is well designed, and the food is good. You won't regret booking here - we had a wonderful time and plan to return.

The details:
Punta Rucia is a very rural area with little infrastructure, but all of your needs are met at the hotel, so that wasn't a huge drawback for us. (The major downside of this is that you don't really get to experience Dominican culture, so it might be nice to combine a stay here with a few days in Santo Domingo.) Since there isn't really anywhere to buy snacks, ice cream, toiletries, etc. in town, you might want to stock up before your arrival. Puerto Plata's airport doesn't have a lot to offer, so stopping at a store before you're too far out in the country would probably be a good idea.

The beach is absolutely gorgeous, and while the water is shallow, the owner informed us that they will be doing some work to make a deeper swimming area in front of the hotel. Right now there are some good swimming areas a short walk in either direction from the hotel.

This is truly a boutique hotel. It is beautifully and thoughtfully designed, and the service is impeccable. Everyone is super friendly, in addition to being very good at their jobs. The area could be a mini Tulum in a few years if it is developed carefully, but Punta Rucia Lodge has more amenities and is more comfortable than many of the beach front hotels in Tulum. The owner is continually working to make the hotel even better, and his openness to input from guests seems genuine. This is a very special place, and we can't wait to come back!

Transfer from Puerto Plata airport by the resort was seamless if not a little too swift, a quiet word allowed us to take in more of the local scenery on route including cows suckling calves in the middle of the road! All in all around 90minute journey.
On arrival we were allocated our lodge by Jabina in reception, been less than a year old these buildings are in excellent order and ours included a large walk in shower, fridge, safe, 40" TV+sat, coffee/tea making, hair dryer, also beach towels available. Ours was located 20/30m from the sea with stunning views.
We were half board and enjoyed some excellent seafood options and succulent steaks from the menu. The service was very attentive from both Mario and Pedro both with excellent manners and a good understanding of English.
A 10 minute beach walk heading west brings you to Ensenada, with its sweeping bay (deep enough for a swim) this is a great spot for a beer at one of the beach front shacks, plenty of reasonably priced seafood too. Fifteen minutes in the opposite direction is Punta Rucia, less sheltered than Ensenada but equally as attractive in its own way.
Well worth booking the Cayo Arena trip with reception and go early before the madding crowds show up, we had the island to ourselves for 30 minutes.
As with the last reviewer we were the only guests for the majority of our 7 night stay and hopefully with some added exposure and the quality of these reviews this resort will experience the success it deserves.
A few tips for the management we would have found more helpful..
- English translation of the menu
- Tea/coffee cups not paper in lodges plus small cartons of milk
- interact with guests, owner only spoke to us twice

This was our first trip to the Dominican Republic and I am so glad we chose Punta Rucia Lodge. It is in a lush verdant part of the DR and is set on a pristine unspoilt beach.
The rooms are individual A frame villas, most with views of the sea and beach. The design is simple and tasteful.
The restaurant serves well prepared, tasty meals in a very romantic setting overlooking the infinity pool and the sea, though by our fourth day the limited menu was becoming repetitive.
We had the whole resort to ourselves, so we felt very spoilt and pampered. The service and kindness of the staff, made our stay extra special. From Pedro at the restaurant who was always happy to help us, the chef who would advise us on the fresh catch and discuss the preparation, the cleaning staff who noticed that I had placed a wet bathmat out to dry and ran back to replace it with a dry one, and Jabina who gave me her own magazine when she heard my kindle had frozen, all the staff went out of their way to help and please us.
My only regret was that one can not swim in the water. It was between 12-24" deep at the highest tide and the best I could do was lie on the sand and let the water wash over me. I love to swim and play in the sea, so I missed it. If you are happy to sit on the beach, this place is perfect.
The excursion to Cayo Arena was fabulous, but go early as 2-3 boatloads of excursions arrive by 10 am and the small pristine island changes from stunning, quiet beauty to an overcrowded bazaar!

Room Tip: Hang out at the platform at the end of the walkway

Oh, Punta Rucia Lodge! Our love affair was so brief and beautiful. I miss you already.

This was my first impression of the Caribbean and I can’t say I could have dreamed up a more idyllic place. We arrived after dark to a beautifully welcoming staff, a lobster dinner, and a starlit walk on the sandbar. Over the next two days we basked in the sun on a sandy-white beach, swam in crystal-clear waters and embarked on a complementary kayak excursion along the shore. We snorkeled in the reefs of Cayo Arena, toured the mangroves, took a sunset ride on the back of one of the hotel’s 4-wheelers and sampled nearly every variety of rum cocktail ever conceived. AND we managed a siesta. Both days.

The huts are pristine and complete with A/C, palm-thatched roof, and a paved walkway leading right up to our beach-facing porch. The beach is private to the point of seclusion, although if it’s action you seek, the neighboring villages are only five minutes away. The infinity pool. The deck-side bar and restaurant. I’m not entirely certain the entire place wasn’t just a lovely dream.

Every single staff member was extremely gracious and treated us like family from the moment we arrived. Muchas muchas gracias, amigos!

This place was absolutely a Paradise in and of itself. Very quiet, relaxing, peaceful and the service was impeccable. The resort restaurant offered exceptional gourmet dining options. Looking forward to returning in the near future.
