worth a visit to a very historic site on the water. There is no downside..free ample parking, memorial plaques explaining the site..a lovely walk, a lovely place to picnic.

“A Beautiful Experience”
Reviewed March 16, 2012

Fort Phoenix offers a no cost, mini get-away to all. It's a nice to have a place to go and walk, take photos, picnic, play tennis, pick sea shells etc. There's never a fee to park and although it's a simple place, you'll find others enjoying the peace it offers. In the summer you can expect to find it crowded on the weekends, but less so during the weekdays. The off seasons are quiet and used by sightseers and dog walkers. The Springtime brings weddings with the prime spot being a uniquely shaped cedar tree overlooking the water. The beach is modest, but again, free and easy to use. At the west end of the Park you will find some history in the remnants of the Fort used to fight the first naval battle in the Revolutionary War. Whether fishing, bathing or just relaxing, it's a nice place to see if you're in the area. Bathroom facilities are open in season and you will find an occasional food vendors in season as well.

We had a walk and picnic at Fort Phoenix beach and park. We walked on the hurricane barrier and viewed the waves in the harbor.

“Nice Spot By The Water”

This is a great spot to visit if you want to have a picnic, fly a kite, or play tennis. There is the beach with a playground for the kids. The views are spectacular and you can easily spend a few hours here.

“Fort Phoenix State Beach and Reservation- glad to see during visit to Fairhaven”
Reviewed March 27, 2009

Found this park on the DCR (Department of Conservation & Recreation) parks map that is provided with our annual pass. We usually go to Horseneck Beach Reservation in Westport in the summer, but opted to try other beaches in the area during the off-season. If you enjoy a long sandy beach for walking, then you would enjoy Horseneck which is our main purpose.

Fort Phoenix is offers a much smaller beach with tons of sea shells at lining the tide lines. Adjacent to the Beach and Reservation is Fort Phoenix which saw its first battle on May 13-14, 1775, capturing two British sloops in Buzzard's Bay. The fort was rebuilt following a 1778 attack and was named Fort Phoenix after the mythical bird which rose from its own ashes. Ultimately, the fort went out of service in 1876 and purchased in 1926 for the town of Fairhaven.

Seasonally, there is a group of local historical re-enactors that as well as provide tours/musket firing demonstrations. (check with Fairhaven Office of Tourism).

I wouldn't visit if this is the only thing I was coming to see or do, but if in the area for other interests, it is worth a quick visit.
