Woodman’s stands on its own. Seriously the best lobster roll I have ever had. Not too much mayo and no dull filler meat. Even the bun is perfectly grilled. It’s got great New England ambiance and picnic tables out back to enjoy a beautiful summer day (perfectly shaded with a nice big tent). Also the onion rings are perfection - old school style. Definitely a must visit during summer in Massachusetts.

...about the place that “invented” the fried clam. It is a classic. Always on my agenda in Essex, and never disappoints (except why do they really need to put a hot dog roll in the clam “roll” dish- $18.99 ?. I buy it for the clams, not the bread.)

If you like lobster and fried seafood, you’ll probably like Woodman’s, a local institution for over a hundred years. It serves huge portions of fried clams, shrimp, and scallops, accompanied by mountains of French fries. Not too many other
choices, though. The New England clam chowder was kind of bland; the hamburger was okay but nothing special. A lobster role was good, as were the onion rings. It’s self-service – you place an order and wait until it’s ready, and the wait can be considerable. Full bar, no desserts offered. Apart from food they sell t-shirts, mugs, shot glasses and even a jigsaw puzzle featuring a drawing of the restaurant. Not cheap; a couple of lobsters plus onion rings plus coleslaw will run you close to $100, excluding drinks. It’s noisy, with booths and benches that aren’t particular comfortable. Even so, if you’re lusting for fried seafood, you’ll probably be taken with this place.

We’ve been coming to woodmans for years. They have the best chowder and fried clams. Most of the menu items are gluten free!! Delicious.

Although more of a tourist attraction, it's fun to go at least once. It's where the fried clam was invented. Pricey but good portion sizes. Options to eat in the rough in the dining room, or outside under the tent with great marsh views. Ice cream stand out back for dessert. Souveniers shop as well.
