“What a find”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

We had planned on going to Gloucester for lunch, but happened upon Woodmans and decided to stop. This is the best seafood "diner" (for lack of a better word) that I have ever been to. Yes, everything is fried except the lobster roll, but it's supposed to be. This is a traditional menu for this type of New England seafood restaurant. The fried cod was light and delicious and the lobster roll was spectacular. I don't know what they put in the batter for their onion rings, but there was a slight sweetness that was really yummy. We arrived late in the afternoon so missed the lunch rush and the food came quickly.

“A Must Stop !”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

Woodman's is a New England staple starting before the 1920's. Fresh Fried Seafood , onion Rings, Steamers, Clam Fritters, NE Clam Chowder and Boiled pick You Own Lobsters are all a must try at this dining in the rough restaurant. Nothing fancy just down home fresh New England Seafood that will satisfying any seafood craving. This dining experience is a unique treat and worth the wait in line.

“Good in parts...”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

I love clam chowder so I look for it at every opportunity...I visit Cape Ann once a year and if I get near Woodmans I usually stop for a bowl...I might also get say some fried clams or some lobster.

However...this place is not cheap...for what is essentially fast food...fried food in batter whilst sitting at a cafe table in a wooden shack...and that's coming from someone who lives in Central London.

Take a look at the menu...you can do $20 a head quite easily so if your a large group be prepared.

“A New England Find”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

Woodman's is one of those places that is worth standing in line to visit. What makes it easier is that a staff member walks the line outside with cold lemonade and oyster crackers, offering this to all the patient patrons. The food is fried, however, not greasy and heavy. No matter what you order its fresh, delicious and so New England. It is a non pretentious establishment that has been there forever. If you are in the area and want to experience local fresh seafood... go.

“I have been coming here for 50 years.....”
Reviewed July 1, 2013

Started eating at Woodmans as a small child, and there only two changes in that time....prices and the batter used on the onion rings. Only a very few restaurants have access to clams from the Essex clam beds and Woodmans is one of them. If you go there, you MUST have steamers and fried clams. Simply put, they are the best in the world. I have tried fried clams in hundreds of places from Maine to Cape Cod, and I am always disappointed.
Not an inexpensive meal, but well worth it.
