Owner description: The Martha's Vineyard Museum is privileged to be the steward of three of the Island's lighthouses. The East Chop, Edgartown, and Gay Head lighthouses are not only historic reminders of a bygone age, but are working beacons that still send a light out into the night. Beyond their important functional role, these structures also offer visitors spectacular views of the breathtaking beauty of Vineyard Sound, the simple elegance of Edgartown Harbor & Chappaquiddick, and the majestic cliffs of Aquinnah. Major renovations completed in 2007, including installation of a staircase to the lantern room, allow the interior of the Edgartown Light to be open to visitors. A lighthouse keeper will be available and the doors will be open during designated hours. Parking is available, but limited, on North Water Street. The Vineyard Transit Authority (VTA) busses drop off on Church Street in Edgartown. It is a 5-10 minute walk to the lighthouse from this location.

My husand and I visited Martha's Vineyard in October, 2012. While we were out eating we decided to walk to the lighthouse, so glad we did. It was a very easy stroll and we took some GREAT pictures. We were the only two people there, it was so beautfiful. Stop by if you have time during your visit.

Elegant lighthouse in a prime location and within easy reach of the nearby road along with sea front of Edgartown. Not withstanding the functional intent of this building it is also an excellent place to visit.

A friend had a wedding right next to the lighthouse. The keeper was there and very friendly. You could climb to the top (it's a small lighthouse, it's not a difficult climb) and you get a great view of the area. Worth the 10 minute walk from the road.

I was lucky enough to be staying at a home a few steps from the public access path just off Water street. It is very accessible and easy walking. The harbor light is quaint and picturesque. A small naturalized area of scrub and native grasses en route to the lighthouse creates a beautiful quiet retreat where I saw and/or heard dozens of birds, perhaps 20 or more species in a very short time. Bring your camera as well as your binoculars! The harbor light in the background and the plants and birds will give you more than enough subject matter. I didn't actually "tour" the lighthouse, but I noticed the fee was quite reasonable. You can get a very good look at it up close without entering it. It's a lovely backdrop to virtually any picture you take here.

If you have a love for the mystic of light houses, this cast iron wonder is not to be missed. Go to the top and enjoy the 360 degree view of Edgartown and the harbor. And if you are looking for a place for a unique marriage proposal or wedding site, this may be you cup of tea!
