Owner description: The Martha's Vineyard Museum is privileged to be the steward of three of the Island's lighthouses. The East Chop, Edgartown, and Gay Head lighthouses are not only historic reminders of a bygone age, but are working beacons that still send a light out into the night. Beyond their important functional role, these structures also offer visitors spectacular views of the breathtaking beauty of Vineyard Sound, the simple elegance of Edgartown Harbor & Chappaquiddick, and the majestic cliffs of Aquinnah. Major renovations completed in 2007, including installation of a staircase to the lantern room, allow the interior of the Edgartown Light to be open to visitors. A lighthouse keeper will be available and the doors will be open during designated hours. Parking is available, but limited, on North Water Street. The Vineyard Transit Authority (VTA) busses drop off on Church Street in Edgartown. It is a 5-10 minute walk to the lighthouse from this location.

There is a charge to go inside. Plus it is only open certain times, so we never have gone inside. It is ideal for pictures. The beach is calm, but has a ton of shells, so it isn't for a smooth walk, but great for shell collecting.

We enjoyed our walk down to the lighthouse and of course it is within easy reach from most anyplace in Edgartown. We especially enjoyed sitting on the porch with a glass of wine at the Harbor View Hotel.

In our prior visit to Martha's vineyard it was always closed, but more recently it has become open to the public as a fund-raiser for the Edgartown Museum - well worth the $5 admission fee.

The self-guided tour consists of well written narratives and photos that describe it's history, e.g. how the prior light house was demolished by a hurricane and this one relocated from Ipswich, Mass. I found it fascinating that the outer walls which provide the structure are made of custom made (each different) cast iron plates bolted together. Review the history of the light keepers and ponder on how any of us in this modern day could have endured living there...

The access path is located a short walk north from the Edgartown water front and just before getting to the Harbor View Hotel. The small beach surrounding the lighthouse is great for collecting scallop shells and other types.

We walked out to the lighthouse on way from the Bus stop out to town, and we were not disappointed. Not only was the walk out there very enjoyable, the lighthouse was just stunning. There was a small inlet where people were swimming to the left side, and also a quiet beach area out front. We chose not to go to the top on this trip, and are going to save it for our next one, but did sit a while in front of the lighthouse and enjoyed watching the boats pass by.

You've seen it photos & paintings for years and years, so make sure you see it in person. Great view of Edgartown Harbor and downtown.
