“Can't wait to go back”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2006

This was our sixth visit in four years to the Winnetu. Each year we have a better time. We have 2 young children ( 6 and 3 ) and the location could not be better. The staff is wonderful and very, very helpful. The propery is wonderful. Our kids love running around the back yard and going down to the pond to feed the turtles. The beach is a short walk ( approx 5 minutes ). I would highly recommend the Winnetu to anyone who is thinking of going the Vineyard. You will not find another place that comes close. We can't wait to back back in June 07.

It all comes down to a matter of expectations. If the Winnetu billed themselves as a motel (and billed us guests motel prices), I might have been rather pleased.

But they call themselves a resort and charge resort prices without offering the true ameneties and staffing requisite of that title.

I don't think anyone working there has ever attended a class in hotel management. Conversely, I think they just hire a bunch of high school and college kids who have no idea what they are doing and have no business serving people spending over $500 a night.

The staff never seemed to know the answers to our questions or we received conflicting answers to seemingly simple questions, like what time a meal is served, or the shuttle runs (there were two completely different shuttle schedules posted in different places and no one was sure which, if either, was correct). Sometimes, inexplicably, we would be told the shuttle is "not running." (The shuttle or public bus is needed because the town is not as close as implied.) In general, the staff was completely clueless. They even sent our taxi (while they will pick you up from the ferry, they won't drive you back when you leave) to the wrong address.

Our anger with the property started when we arrived and found out we were not "on the beach" as their Reservations office in Sudbury had promised. We had imagined letting our children walk out our room and play in the sand. It was never mentioned that you have to cross a busy road to get to the beach. The shuttle driver admitted privately that many people are fooled by Reservations' claims.

We were also not told that the ocean at the nearby beach is too rough for children. So we paid for an "ocean resort" that wasn't a resort, wasn't on the ocean, and with an ocean the kids couldn't enter safely.

  • Liked — Lush grounds
  • Disliked — Staff incompetency and not living up to advertising
  • Tips/Secrets — Don't believe them. It's not a "resort". It's a motel a block from the beach.

The Winnetu was rated by Child magazine as a top resort/hotel for families. Martha's Vineyard doesn't have a lot of family properties to offer, and I would highly recommend the Winnetu. It's a bit pricey, but well worth it. We traveled with our 2 1/2 yr old and were able to walk out to the beach every day, swam in the outdoor heated pool, played and read on the beautiful grounds- a great experience! It is about a 7 minute drive into Edgartown, so bring a car or use the hotel's shuttle service. The room had a kitchenette which was convenient for quick meals with a toddler.

The Winetu Resort has been a great vacation destination for my family. The kids love the day camp which also offers morning
tennis instruction. This 8-12 noon day camp allows my wife and eye to enjoy some quiet time together in the mornings.
We are also able to take advantage of the new spa and fitness facilities. Between clambing with the kids, the great beaches,
water shuttle into to town, and use of the Winetu's facilities
this remains a favorite destination.

The first weekend of June our son presented us with a four day stay at the Winnetu on Martha's Vineyard. It was our first time on the island and I hope its not our last. The Winnetu management and staff met us on our arrival and made us feel very welcome. Our room was comfortable, clean and nicely furnished with a view of the ocean.
Our overall stay was wonderful. The management and staff of the Winnetu make sure your stay is pleasant and enjoyable. I would highly recommend the Winnetu.
