Owner description: The infamous name marks a small, scenic island perfect for bike-riding.

We rented bicycles in Edgartown. We carried a lunch in our backpacks and rode the ferry over. There is a fee for the round trip ride on the ferry per bike. Most of the roads are easy to ride, but ... some are dirt, a few are rocky and steep, but still a lot of fun. Of course, if you have a car, you can drive over via the ferry. The Japanese Garden is peaceful and very pretty and a wonderful place to eat a picnic lunch. This is the only place on the island where there are bathrooms. The beaches around the island are beautiful, but you have to pay to use the public beach, so bring some cash if you want to spend any time there. We spent about 2 1/2 hours riding around the island wich is about the right ammount of time if you aren't going to spend time at the beach. When this review page asks if there is a fee, I will say yes, but ... the fee is for the ferry ride over and for the beach if you choose to go on the public beach.

This bit of island off Edgartown is famous to most as the spot where Ted Kennedy drove his car off a wooden bridge returning from a late night daliance on the dunes with a young lady who died. Did Ted freak out? Who knows? But Mary Jo died that night along with Ted's national political chances.

We liked Mytoi Gardens. We liked Cape Poge Beach. We loved the walk from Mytoi down to the beach and we loved the quiet and the brief ferry ride over.

The beaches here are truly beautiful. If the added cost of the ferry to get there doesn't put you off, it's well worth it. The Trustees of the Reservation at Mytoi offer many programs to show you around if you don't have your own transportation. We've enjoyed the fishing safari tours, and the kayak tours very much.

The ferry across is fun and the black top part of the road is great for biking. B.U.T. if you want to see the Japanese gardens you are on hard-packed sand which is very bumpy! There's a $3.00 charge to walk on the beach.
