The Great Beach, visited by Henry David Thoreau, is right here. Nice chance to study beach changes, both longshore transport of sand, and coastal erosion. Nauset Marsh is lclose to the former Coast Guard Station. There is a path that leads to the bicycle trail bridge. Lots of shorebirds are on the flats in the summer and in the salt marsh grass. Nauset Spit is a good walk out to a barrier beach. Nauset Marsh is at the end of Nauset Spit. Local author Henry Beston (Cape Cod's own Thoreau), wrote his book; "The Outermost House" from his beach cottage that he built here. The Inn at the Oaks is the best B&B to stay at nearby.
